Ever since I saw it in the 2017 Signature catalog something was nagging at me about the PW-inspired Alco FA set with the three green 2400 series cars. Over the weekend I found - quite by accident - what I was recalling.

A few years ago Classic Toy Trains did a couple of special issues on Lionel trains in the decade of the 1950s. In the second volume there’s a feature on the 1957 catalog and the famous layout that appeared on the back pages. Accompanying that article are some photos of various layouts, including one from a gentleman named Steve Garofalo. On his large layout there is it is!  A set of green AA Alco FAs (adorned as Lionel Lines) with the passenger cars. And a closer look shows that it’s actually an ABA configuration with the passenger cars following.

The obvious question is what is this and where did he get it? From Lionel or just a set he owned but with a custom paint job?

An interesting situation given that this set is now a reality and will be out later this year.

I got just the cars, no engine. The packaging was very well done - very cool with the retro boxes, Postwar "paper" and such. Normally I throw out all boxes except original Postwar boxes and engine boxes but I saved these and put them on display with my other Postwar boxes.

The cars are great. The lighting could be a bit better (will eventually replace with 14V bulbs) but I'm happy. I always thought the Turbine and green coaches was the nicest Postwar train ever made. Always my favorite. Go figure, my turbine is Out of Service pending a very minor repair. I had them running with my 726RR and 2025 last week.

I would not rule out replacing them in distant the future with a set of originals. As I do not plan to attend York  at all in 2018 (), the reproductions are the next best thing.
