I lost my Dad back in 2006. He was retired from the N&W and worked on the 2300 until it was scrapped in 11/57. It was after losing him that I got this crazy notion of getting one example of each N&W steamer built. Looking forward to getting my Class M in a couples of months.

For those of you who still have your Dad, don't miss the opportunity to see him or at least pick up the phone and talk today! Now that I have my beautiful Daughter in Law, I have no worries about my younger son forgetting what today is.

Happy Fathers Day everyone!

My dad, and his dad, were the ones responsible for my love of trains.  My grandfather gave me my first train set (1930's Lionel, which I still have), and my dad gave me my first modern era (MPC) trains.  In addition, my dad would take me to see steam locomotives whenever he could.  I can still remember him taking me, as a little boy, to see a PRR engine that was on display at the Westinghouse Air Brake plant in Wilmerding, PA.  And even more, I can still remember the day he took me down to the tracks to see the American Freedom Train come through my home town - that was the day I became infatuated with steam, as there is nothing quite like them when they are operating under their own power.

I lost my dad earlier this year, but I will always remember him, and the role he played in my life.

Guys, Like me who became a Dad a long 23 years ago, I credit my Dad with getting me interested in running toy trains and observing real one's! They truly are marvels aren't they! Happy Father's Day to all the Dad's past and present who filled our lives with the portent of this wonderful hobby! And to the Father's of this wonderful site which allows us to communicate together! Mike Maurice

What is a father?

He is his son's first hero  and  his daughter's first love.

The greatest gift a father can give his children is to love their mother.

I lost my father 12 years ago at the age of 92. He bought me my first train set for Christmas 1947.

I my self am now 71 and I am a father and grandfather. The best of both worlds.

Happy fathers day to all the other fathers.

Great thread!  I have many fond memories of AF loops under the Christmas tree and then when I was 10 or so my dad made a layout with 2 separate loops for my brother and I as a Christmas present.  I have no idea how he found the time to make it with 4 kids (2 younger sisters) but somehow he did and the seed was planted and still grows strong today.   To all our dad's - the true American Heroes (along with our military) - Happy Father's Day!

A belated Happy Father's Day to all forum Fathers and Fathers to be!

It was my Grandfather, who taught me to use a hammer and nails to build benchwork, and my Father, who taught me wiring and to respect electricity, who got me started in this great hobby and how to care for the trains.

My Grandfather has been gone for nearly 24 years and I still miss him terribly.  I wish he could see the trains now.  My dad now resides in Arizona and we're hoping to visit him this summer.

It was so fun chatting with dad, my wife's dad, my three babies and my eight Grandbabies today!
