Cool. Though his comment "it's about to be over, the idea that a car runs free, those days are about to close" kinda changed what I was seeing into long narrow cages.
That was awesome. That's what a layout built by an avant garde artist looks like. Chris Burden is about 65. He famously shot himself for a conceptual piece in 1971.
here's a link to his Wikipedia page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Burden

Where'd he get all the cars?

Back in the early 90's I worked as an art installer and helped deinstall the Chris Burden "Medusa Head". This was a big planet shaped ball hanging from the ceiling and covered with model trains/track. Mostly HO and some N scale Marklin. Don't remember any O gauge on it... At the time Burden tried to get it written up in Model Railroader magazine but they turned him down because the trains were only on static display and did not run.
Here it is on the MOMA site.

I think the Metropolis 2 is better. Action really helps.
He did a bunch of erector set bridges too but I think they fell a little short of the mark... No trains or cars running through them really made them feel static and boring.
Oh, and you gotta realize that Chris Burden himself probably never touched anything. It is all built by assistants. He just comes up with the ideas and collects the money...

Terrific video, but, after viewing it, it really makes me want to commute by train...
I've seen it before, but it looks like it's grown quite a bit since the last time I saw it.
(Or maybe this is a different one?)
Really cool.
