Hello all, new guy here.
Ahhh.... finally. That time in life when the kids are gone, work doesn't need 24-7 attention (most days) and the farm is scaled back to a manageable chaos. TIME FOR TRAINS!
When I say new guy, I mean NEW guy! Not to just this great forum but to 0-27 trains as well. I have dabbled a teeny bit in N scale but nothing I would show my ma. They were always too small and missing 'something'. Turns out what N scale is missing is a THIRD rail! I am so hooked it is not funny.
A few weeks ago we had our biannual town garage sale and I snagged the Lionel Wisconsin Central Highball Freight set #6-31986 with the CW-80 transformer and Fastrack for 30 bones (UNUSED). I brought it home and promptly commandeered the kitchen island for a temporary train table (wife somewhat displeased as we are on the third week now). The very first thing I noticed is that Fastrack is kinda crap. It is noisy and not all that stable. The train seemed to derail about every third lap at anything over 40% throttle.
After a little frustration with Fastrack I remembered an old box of O-27 track of my old mans was in my hobby pile. Not much, just a small oval and a power lockon but it was enough.
Train 2.0 - Runs great, can't hardly make it derail at less that 75% throttle and best of all, quiet. So very quiet.
Hmmm now I need a layout. I have an old copy of Atlas RTS 8 I think, but see a lot of people here playing with SCARM. I downloaded that and designed a layout that suits me. I am a big mountains, sheer cliffs and long trestle kind of guy... I have a layout designed, now what?
Ah ha! ebay lol. I cleaned out a few auctions that had some good O-27 track. Now I sit here waiting on the lumber yard to drop off a package of lumber (barn renovations the wife thinks...).
Below is a pic of my first O scale train. You will notice how Menards sucked me in to purchasing a new WC boxcar and a Menards delivery truck...
