I went to run the trains this evening with my son and as soon as I turned on the Cab2 all the screens including the bottoms went totally dark. All the pixels were on. How do i fix this?

I pulled the batteries for about 15 minutes and when I put them back in everything worked fine.
Re-boots are often the simplest solution for digital electronic devices!
That was going to be my suggestion, but I see that you already had success with it.
Glad it work out for you, the worse think that can happen is having train that you cannot run.

No the worse is having a 2 year old wanting to see trains that can not run!
That's why I have two CAB2's and a backup CAB1/command base that usually lives on my workbench.

I have been debating on buying a #993 expansion set so I can have an extra Cab2.
That's what I have. The bonus is the #993 charger works better than the #990 one, even after the Lionel repairs. The remote is nice and cool when the charge completes, so I charge both of them in the #993.

I wonder why the charging circuits are different, as I assume the only difference between the #990and the #993 base is the boards.
I haven't ripped them apart to check, but I'm guessing the other electronics in the #990 are heating things up under there when it's recharging. It probably would be instructive to measure the charging current for each of the bases. Both of mine have been back to Lionel for the charging upgrade.
