Help with MTH Q2

Hey all,

I was experiencing a problem with my Q2 and need some assistance. The engine runs/smokes fine, but something weird happens with the sound: randomly through running, the sound will become either very low or start to break up.. sometimes even goes silent. I looked at the internals of the tender and from what I saw, everything looks to be fine. No fried board and we have continuity from the board wires to the wire that connects to the engine. Could there be a spliced wire that I can't see? If so, what can I do? In addition, when I turned the smoke unit on, it drew over 2 amps, but when I turned it off, it drew 1-1.3 amps. Would this have any correlation to my problem?

What model number?  If this is a PS-2 5V board with the 9V style battery it uses a 16 ohm speaker that the metal around the magnet flakes and starts impacting the coil.

 

You just may need a new speaker.  I have them in stock.

 

Speakers can also go bad and become intermittent for a period.  The other issue is the audio amp can be going bad.

 

I would check speaker first.  G

G raises a good point. Here's a picture to guide you on checking the speaker. On the left is a new speaker. Note that the plating is a silvery color, and the finish is clean. On the right is the old speaker that I replaced. You can see that the plating around the edges of the magnet has deteriorated. The flaking was much worse on the side of the magnet, which is not clearly visible in the photo. Also the plating is more of a gold color; the color of the plating will identify a new-type speaker versus an NOS of the old style. As you can see, MTH changed vendors for this part.

First off, thanks for taking time to offer me assistance. The item # is 20-3048-1, which was the first make of it. I had a problem with a speaker and metal coils on another engine and fixed it. I plan on taking a closer look on it tomorrow.

Southwest Hiawatha,

I checked the tender last night and found a very small amount of corrosion, which I cleaned up. I tested all the wires and nothing is wrong with them. In addition, there was nothing wrong with the speaker. I ran it today and I noticed that in neutral, the engine sounds worked fine: I held the whistle button down for a good minute and sounded fine. As soon as I started to go forward, the sound would just drop very low, which is the problem I am having. What do I do? Any other suggestions? I really appreciate all the help.
