how do you add sound to a tender

You can purhcase Railsounds kits from ElectricRR .

Lionel is also listing the Sound Commander 2 cards in their 2011 V2 catalog. Not as good as the Railsounds, but about half the cost.

I added this to my HP tender. They offer a Penny Switcher soundset that has a Banchee whistle. it sounds "European enough" for me. The HP tender has an air whistle. Very easy to swap for the ERR board.

I believe you can buy the whistle board from the Shakespeare Express set through a Lionel parts dealer or Lionel direct. Sound Commander 2 is no more (docksider set was excellent for this purpose).

You'd think after 4 catalogs Lionel would figure out they need to change that page. the rail sound commander is all you can get now and instead of it being 49 bucks like sound commander 2 it's 100 bucks.

The sound commander and its instructions are idiot friendly. Speaking as an idiot that has isntalled one

i'm sure I'll test that theory. will i need the speaker and extra stuff or is it just a module you unplug (old sound board) and plug?

In spite of being in the catalog, the Sound Commander is NOT, and hasn't been for a year or so.

There may be some of the kits still out there at shops that carried them. They are no longer in production. The kits include speaker (with baffle), wires, trigger's, a (as in one) rare earth magnet for wheel sensor use. The board is small and should fit almost anywhere.

These were great products and I'm sorry to see them go. They had nice sounds and worked well in conventional as well as command mode.

I am also bummed they dropped production of the Sound Commander, they would solve a lot of problems with smaller locomotives where you just can't cram the RailSounds Commander into them.
