Has anyone removed a motor from an Atlas rs-1? I've been working on one that had a few broken wires and am curious how to get the motor out. I didn't need to remove it for the repairs, just wondered.

Most vertical-can locomotives have a screw on the bottom of the power truck that holds the motor mount in place. Loosen that screw and the motor lifts out of the truck. To put it back, turn the wheels and the gears will pull it into place so you can insert and tighten the screw. On some truck setups, the motor mount screw may be behind the pickup roller, so you'll have to remove it first. The Lionel Dash-9's are like that.
Hope this helps.
Atlas locomotives are more complicated than that. Here's the exploded parts diagram which should help.

Thanks for the Diagram.

I was trying to do this just last week. Like just about every other China drive truck, there is a screw that has to be removed from the bottom of the truck. However, the screws that hold the common and hot wires to the truck have to be removed also. The hot wire screw holds the pickup roller and the common wire screw goes through the motor mount and into the truck. Access to these is a real bear as you have to get to them from the top. You will need a small philips screwdriver with a long, thin shank. Suggest you remove the tach sensor board from the side of the rear motor first. It's not a maintenance friendly design. Good luck!
