Kato has released some wonderfully accurate N scale sets of famous passenger trains. I have my eyes on the Broadway Limited. While my home layout is three rail O gauge, it's times like this I'm grateful I've made the decision to be non-scale specific in my approach regarding my equipment roster. If a model I like is released and I have funds available, I'll purchase it regardless of the scale.

Thanks for the link to the video.

Here is my version of the train. I have the correct cars, but they are only Lionel's Hi-level 18" cars (not scale 21"). I also got a second Lionel Coach I turned into the first step down car and an extra MTH one for the second step down car. The engines are the Lionel F7 set. Sorry for the shaky film work...

Kato's N scale product line is amazing. IMO the Kato tiny N scale version of the NYC M-497 jet powered RDC put Lionel to shame. The Kato's sound and lighting details, especially the front and rear of the jet engines as they increase power is impressive compared to Lionel's very bland and feature lacking 2010/11 O gauge conventional offering. Lionel could have/should have had (is that poor grammar? Confused ) a true winner in O gauge with this distinct offering, but they sadly cheaped out. Frown

One also has to understand that Kato, Walthers, Athearn, etc. only have to appeal to ONE market: The Scale Market.

There are no "traditonal, tinplate, hirail or 3-rail scale" markets in HO and N. Plus modelers in those scales are either conventional DC or the open DCC system. (I seriously doubt that many HOer's are 100% DCS, which just happens to also be DCC compatible.)

That's because the other scales didn't do the oversize wheel standard gauge ,The stuff that was never made in the first place Coal loader,Log loader,
They also don't have a third rail.

Coarse they only have one operating system (DCC)Wheels that look real(RP25),switches that look and operate flawlessly But I like the bigness of O scale so what do you do?

I have a MTH El Capitan set ABA with 4 cars . The PS1 went belly up soon after I got it, so I installed TMCC and sound from ERR . I was a little disappointed because I lost the station sounds announcements and I don't know what the jibber jabber is when you press the crew talk for the err boards but to me if that's what your putting in there why bother at all?

Kato makes some excellent engines. I have a DCC equipped Mikado that's sitting in my N scale drawer BLI also makes good stuff I have a bunch of their F Series engines and some nice steam, my favorite being the DCC equipped Y6B I have 2 .They look cool double heading a coal train .

...but the last thing I need is model yet another scale, gauge or country for that matter!

Carful, those Japanese trains have a bad history of giant monsters trying to eat them, better take out some Special insurance for Giant monster attacks.

Lionel also made the SF Hi-Level cars in 18", and although the K-Line and Lionel sets are very nice (I own a set of the Lionel's), they are basically modern Superliner cars with a few modifications. Also neither K-Line nor Lionel made a complete train set, correct me if I'm wrong, K-Line made all the cars except the Lounge car, and Lionel never made the step down car or the transition car.

I'd like to see one of the big train manufactures produce the complete true Budd made El Capitan train set in O scale. If Atlas can produce those beautiful CZ cars, I can only imagine what a set of Atlas made EL Cap cars would look like pulled by an ABBA set of F3 or F7 war bonnet's. Smile

Joe,

That is mostly correct. They never made the 528 class step-up/step-down chair cars. But in their El Capitan Streamline set (6-29144), you can get the transition car (acurately numbered) without the cowling.

In my video above, the step up car and step down car at the end of the train are cars I made taking hi-level cars and moving the doors/diaphrams. I made a cowling for the transition car out of styrene. The first baggage car is an MTH one and the second is the lionel one out of the El Capitan Streamline 2-car add-on set (6-25408).

I based the making of the train on this web site.

I like your style! Have N,HO,O and G scale locomotives . Just wish I had room to run them all.
