Have read a bunch threads on this subject and have tried several times to install the traction tire.

It is my understanding that you loosen the rod attached to the wheel , slide the tire under it and put it on the wheel.

This is the tire Lionel sent me: The wheel is 1.5 inches wide,   the traction tire is .75, a big stretch , appreciate you advice

Well folks, looks like I will learn to replace traction tires , the one tire that was replaces yesterday broke after running about 80 feet. Don't know if I nicked it or what.  The 3/4 inch tire is what Lionel sells for the VL Hudson 700E, they do list a 1.0 inch but it is not available.

Any suggestions are welcome!

That's not the one they recommended to me yesterday. It's this one 6101207206. The measurements are completely different. To begin with it has a 1" diameter. These are 1.00" ID x .050" TH X .118" WD

From the manual

Lionel has provided extra traction tires to replace the installed traction tires if they ever wear out. The traction tires are replaced by unscrewing the drive rod screws using the supplied wrench. See Figure 10. Slip off the old traction tire and remove it from under the drive rod. Place the new traction tire (Lionel part no. 6000222108) on the wheel and re-tighten the drive rod screw.

Not to argue but Lionel sold me the 3/4 inch tires as the correct ones, the 1.00OD inch were listed on the parts list but as unavailable. I did find the 1.00OD on Ebay and they work great.

It looks like Lionel now is selling the correct part, just timing on my part.

I really like my VL Engines.!!!!

Brent

I have that engine and use MTH Hudson tires on it.  I always remove brake shoes when they are present.  Follow the good comments the guys gave.  Remember, a slip on fit is desired.  Do not treat a tire like a rubber band as it will stay to the size you stretch it at.

If a tire comes off, throw it away and do not put it back.  It mostly likely came off for not following the tips in this post.  No glue.  DO NOT USE GLUE.  Stay clear from that Bull Frog crap or similar.  Always replace a tire with a tire.  I run my trains for long period of time and doing tires properly will make it happen.  I have a few engines and anything that can be done to make life easy is a good thing.

I have a few Lionel Legacy diesels.  I love Legacy diesels.  The first thing I do when obtaining a new one is  Xacto the tires and replace with MTH tires.  Now you have a great running locomotive that goes down the track smoothly.

Your Hudson is an easy job.  It is also a great locomotive.
