I have an atlas gm&o sd-40 diesel...beautiful engine...but it has the generic diesel sounds of a non-turbo engine. This has always been a problem for me. Can the correct sd-40 sounds be changed in this engine...and who or where could do this? It is tmcc now and would run on the legacy system. Thanks for any information...I would have this done if feasible.

Lionel only let Atlas, K-Line and Weaver(?) have generic railsounds as part of their TMCC package. They kept the locomotive specific soundsets for their own steam and diesels
Thanks for the reply...I was aware of that...I just thought that there was another way to get the turbo diesel sounds.
If you ever figure out how to squeeze those sounds out of Lionel, please tell me as well.
Both QSI and Tsunami have the appropriate sound sets.
One could, of course, rip out the electronics and go DCC. No?
Perhaps one of the electronic gurus here could figure out how to jury rig a sound decoder into the existing engine for, at least, motor sounds that are proportional to motor voltage. The HO units are small, too.
With ERR boards you can zero out motor sounds and leave only horn/bell.
You could buy a Lionel SD40 and exchange sound chips. That's the only way to do it at present.

I would bet this post will generate someone who has done a Lionel to DCS conversion and might be able to help you.
