I was given a Weaver WM 2-8-0 to look at that was having some stalling and smoke unit issues. After solving these I noticed the engine was running a bit jerky at slow speeds. At first I thought is was just typical EOB behavior but decided to look a little closer at the speed sensor and tach tape. I discovered a flywheel I had not seen before. Rather than having a smooth surface and paper tach tape attached, the brass flywheel had grooves machined into it. The grooves were filled with black paint and and unpainted brass provided the contrasting reflectance. Some of the grooves close to each other had paint missing, maybe 4 in a row. I repainted the grooves, reassembled the engine, and voila, smooth low speed running again, well smooth for EOB anyway.

That said, Weaver does not design their engines like most other manufacturers. The way they "attach" some of the appliances like power reverse and front steps is very unusual to say the least.

However, the same issue exists, if 3rd Rail was no longer around, you might not be able to buy belts.
