The newer Lionel F3/F7 units have Sequence Control.  I assume the 2010 and 2012 f units are very similar if not exactly the same. Is it possible to just swap out a "board"? If so, are the part(s) required available from Lionel?

I thought I was only a steam engine guy until I bought this for my son. It has become one of my favorite engines.

Thanks

Bill

Take a look t the parts diagram on the Lionel website for both engines since that would give you a good idea. You might also contact the Lionel Repair folks and talk to them. Could be a simple hardware change but there might be something in there that is completely different. I would think the parts diagrams are your best starting point.

There are a few differences between the 2010 and the 2012 models, mainly to do with switch placement and other details. But I would think that the Sequence Control feature is  a part of the Railsounds functionality, and thus would require at least the later railsounds board. As far as I am aware these are only available on an exchange basis from Lionel. But there would be absolutely no harm at all in you asking them.

Folks, 95% of Sequence Control is located in the Main Control Board; the RCMC.  The RCMC has expanded (Program) memory to implement this feature.  The older R4LC was unable to store more functionality, so this board can't be retrofitted.

To upgrade to sequence control from a loco that does not have it would require a complete swap out of the electronics.  Not a small task.

Simply put, on newer Legacy locomotives, by pushing and holding AUX1 a pre-programmed sound and event file is accessed based on the input from the Velocity controller.  Certain speed steps will trigger sounds and whistle effects.  At speed crossing warning from the engine will sound.
