If you don't wish to use the facility for anything else, you could always use the Legacy RECORD feature to turn on any TPC and AVC units, together with any other start-up actions you wish to perform.  Then you just need to press 'Record' when you power on your layout, and the recording playback will turn on any units attached.

thank you both for your prompt replys. to turn on track power it is fairly easy with the tpc---press tr1 then 1 again then push up on while rotating brake-boost. to turn on accessory power its a bit difficult and it sometimes doesn't turn on. to turn on the avc first you have to find tr2 (not always easy) then press 2 then press aux1 then press 2 again.

here is a tidbit i learned; i almost sent my 990 in for repairs. last week i was having trouble with the battery charger, batteries wouldn't charge. i called lionel service they said the batteries probably gone bad. they sent me a new battery pack my 990 is still under warranty. when i put in the new batteries and turned on track power all engines started up at once some ran full speed, i immediately hit the halt button and everything stopped. i charged up the old batteries on a seperate charger and tried them and the same thing happened. i am running base and cab2 v.1.51 i also have a backup base profile so i ran the base profile and reprogramed base and cab2 with v.1.51. everything ran normal so i put in the new battery pack again and had the same problem again. after fiddeling around for several hours and almost sending it back to lionel, i discovered the problem and a simple solution. apparently if there is power to the base and you pull the batteries out of the cab2 its brain gets scrambled---it goes nuts when the track power is turned on. when changing batteries in cab2 pull the power to the base first replace the batteries then reconnect power to the base.

yes that is true. you can press the red triangle button or the triangle in the #5 position on the glass squares. turning it on is far more difficult.

Sounds Like Nicole has the answer for turning them on. If you don't want to use up the one recording in the remote you could buy a TMCC recorder (ARC) and set the on and off recordings in it and use the Legacy record feature for a train operation. The ARC has 8 records available it and they are assigned as acc #'s. To play a recording the keypress is ACC then the # of the recording then AUX2.

ron thanks for the advice but i think i would be more confused than i already am! i am writing a cliff notes style booklet on how to operate my trains.

It's really not all that bad. Take off the jumper on the side of the arc and then press the ACC key and then the recording number (1) then press AUX1 then 9 to start recording. Then enter all the commands necessary to turn on the items you want on. When all the commands are entered and all the items you want on are working then press AUX1 then 0 to stop recording and replace the jumper. Once that is complete one time all that you have to press is ACC then 1 then AUX2 to play it. It can be used with the same 3 keystrokes any time you want.

Gunny, I'd love to come and help. But sadly I don't think that will be possible, as I've just been told that I only have a few months left. I'm still trying to come to terms with this knowledge, so please excuse me if I may not always answer promptly.

Thanks Gunny. I really do appreciate that. And I thank you for the compliment. Although, I have far less knowledge than many others in the forum, and think that they deserve far more credit than me. I've spent most of the past 40 years solving problems, and I just always try to think logically and to keep things simple.

I know that this forum probably isn't the correct place to have revealed my impending demise, and for that I apologise for all. I thought that I had beaten my cancer, but yesterday I was told that that was not to be. I'm a bit of a mess at the moment.

As long as I am able to, I'll carry on doing all that I can to try and help others, But please excuse any slow responses at times.

Nicole, my prayers are with you.
