I am modeling a tourist train and need a pair of full-size (18" long) smooth side passenger coaches to match the prototype cars (former DL&W coaches). I noticed that K-Line's 18" aluminum Observation cars have nearly the exact window and door arrangements except for the fact they have blunt observation ends. It looks like the observation end is a separate piece, and I wondered if I could take an observation car and remove the blunt end and replace it with the flat end (with end doorway) found on other K-line cars? Are the end castings glued to the sides, or screwed together? How easy is it to disassemble a K-line 18" aluminum car?

Has anyone tried this before? Thanks.

K-line aluminum cars are fairly easy to disassemble.  The end caps are screwed in place to the frame.  Remove the screws and the end caps will come off.  You then disconnect the wiring harness from the light board and then the plate frame with the trucks slides out of the aluminum extrusion.

Finding a replacement endcap may end up being the more difficult proposition as on the K-Line cars the vestibule side has the door cast as part of the end cap while the non-vestibule side is a different style end cap.
