K-Line K-29212 CC-M upgrade (1 CC-M + 4 motors)?

Broke the truck all the way down and cleaned everything up with an extra toothbrush (not my wife's ). Worm gear definitely has a crack between two of the teeth - see photos below. I put the whole thing back together, greased it up, and tested it out - definitely still binding

I got a reply from Brasseur/Train Doctor folks and they said they don't know the part number for the worm gear and don't have any of them in stock. I'm following up to see if they have the whole truck instead as I wouldn't be against replacing it if the price isn't too steep.

I could also just disconnect/remove the motor for that truck - 3 motors without binding is better than 4 with binding.

Any other ideas for replacement gears?

Since it's on the axle, I think you're really going to have to find the exact part.

If you could find the exact same size gear, you could pull the axle apart and press the gear on and then put the wheel back on.

Mike, didn’t Brassseur have a few axles with gears and wheels. Maybe counting the teeth and have them check what the have?? I doubt they would have different diameter axle gears with the same number of teeth.

I replaced a gear like this on a CC II Shark a few years back. I used a vice, a punch, and some different sized sockets to do the pressing off/on.

I marked the wheel and axle position before removing them so I could line up the splines when reinstalling them.

Worked pretty well.

This one from Brasseur looks pretty similar and has "PA" in the description.

I don't see where the wheels fit onto that axle though? Doesn't seem wide enough. But for $7.50 it might be worth a shot

You may have done that the hard way, I believe they still have gears and trucks available for the CC II Shark.

That's the internal drive gear, it's not the axle.

This must not be the right part, then, because you can see from my pictures above that the worm gear is on the axle. Either that or I'm missing something

That gear assembly looks an awful lot like the Lionel gear assemblies for F3 and GP trucks. Were the Locomotives from the Lionel/K-line timeframe?

Its really only the gear that matters. With the axles removable it should be fairly easy to pull the gear and wheels off. If possible use a press, even a drill press with a pin punch or hard steel rod. Don’t pound them off with a hammer or use a two jaw gear puller or you risk breaking the wheel flanges. 7 bucks is cheap gamble. Stock Drive Parts or other 3rd Party supplier will cost you 3 times as much and the gear still might not be perfect.

Looks like the set was released in 2003. I don't recall when K-Line became K-Line by Lionel.

Pete, this is one case where the risk to the flanges is minimal!

There is a right way and wrong way to remove wheels. Save the hammers for pounding nails. If you don’t have a press you can use a bench vise and short pin punch.

When I had looked, they only had the whole truck. However, the same motor and worm P/N was used in a six axle truck from the same year, which had a center axle that was available with the gear.  At only like $8 vs $30+ I took a chance that it used the same gear and axle size. It did so everything worked out.  I then bought a whole truck as insurance after I learned about the parts sale.

Plus I like a challenge. 🙂

I did the same thing Bob, I bought the complete truck and a couple of the gears.  Turned out the gears worked fine, so I have a whole truck and a spare gear.  Given the design of the CC II Shark truck, I may yet need those spare parts, it's a common failure.

For future reference, the gear on the motor is the worm gear. The gear on the axle that is driven by the worm gear is called the worm wheel.

Worm gear = worm wheel in their lingo

The "screw" on the motor shaft is the worm shaft or just worm.
