Just curious what opinions are, positive or negative, on putting the 9v battery in Legacy engines that are only run in Legacy mode? Yea or nay and why? How long do the batteries last? Any downside to doing so? Thanks.

I have never put a battery in any Legacy or TMCC loco for that matter running in command control.
There really should be no need to unless you have deadspots on your layout. Some members have posted issues with deadspots on Atlas turnouts.
I have a fastrack layout and have never lost power to a loco unless the track was dirty. A quick track cleaning solves that.
The 9 volt battery option is really intended for folks running conventionally, so they don't lose sounds during direction changes.
I believe Lionel has slowly been getting away from the battery option in recent offerings.
I say "nay".
I have a steamer that drops the sound on a certain layout sometimes. So I run a battery. But otherwise not.
you can not compare a MTH to a Legacy when it comes to the battery.
the MTH charges the battery, the legacy does not.
I don't have any batteries in my Legacy engines, don't have any TMCC, no problems. I also have Atlas track and turnouts, no problems there either. All the Legacy engines I have (all diesels) are good runners and perform very well.
I don't understand why Lionel doesn't put a charging circuit in their engines. That way you could put a BCR in there instead of a battery. Myself i do not like a battery in any engine because of the chance the battery could leak.

I use this in several of my lionel engines and in a sound box car. works very well.
