The engine has lost its chuff.  I suspect  the cherry switch or the IR tether. All sounds work. If all sounds work can I assume the tether is ok? Then the cherry switch.  Have  to remove the front truck to get to the cherry switch. There is a screw on the bottom of the truck, will this release the truck from the body so I can get to the switch? Is there anything I should be aware of as I attempt this repair. I happen to have on hand the proper switch.

Thanks for any advice.

Not that much.  If you can trigger the whistle/bell/coupler from the remote, it's not the IR link or the tender.  The chuff comes over the serial link, same as all the other sound commands.

I'd probably test the switch first by rotating the motor with an ohmmeter across the point it connects to the motherboard to ground to see if it's really the switch or wiring.  Many times, you just need to bent the switch spring tab slightly to fix these.  Also, with the articulated truck, it's not uncommon for a broken wire to kill the chuff.
