Visited my local train shop today, and they had a tempting combo including a Legacy Powermaster and Cab 1L with an adapter included....  I didn't want to pull the trigger until I read up on it some more...  I build my son a 5x9 layout that operates around 3-4 locomotives at a time.  It is two loops with 3 sidings.  We only run lion chief locos, and frankly, I am getting sick with quality control, connectivity issues, and price of them (plus, having 6 controllers is kinda a pain, and yes, I have a universal remote).  We use a Z1000 to power the tracks, and a CW80 to power operating accessories and lights.  Reading the Legacy Powermaster manual, it says you cant use a Z1000 as a power supply?

We have no interest in running conventional locos, and will probably focus on TMCC.  All of our lionchief, lionchief plus, and lionchief plus 2.0 all run fine with the Z1000.

Thanks for your time!

PowerMaster is for running conventional locos. You don't want that. As you've discovered, early LionChief's cannot be controlled by the Universal Remote or anything else other than the Bluetooth remote that came with the set. We hope that the answers to your question and desires will be found in the forthcoming CAB/BASE3 system.

LionChief locos will not respond to changes in voltage controlled by a Powermaster/cab-1L combo.  They only respond to the LionChief commands, and some to commands from the Lionel app.  For LionChief, a fixed voltage from your Z1000 is all they need.  You do not need a cab-1L and it will not control TMCC or Legacy locos without a cab-1L or Legacy base, so don't waste your money on the cab-1L unless you are planning to get a command base and use TMCC/Legacy locos.  Don't waste your money on a Powermaster unless you plan to control conventional locos.

My suggestion, get a second Universal Remote for $50 or so.  You can have up to three locos in each remote, so you will only need two remotes for your six locos.
