This past weekend I was running trains on the layout for several guests when the Legacy 4-4-2 B&O came to a stop without reason. It was on a straight section of the layout with no switches nearby. I immediately killed the power to the track as a MTH engine running on the same track was about to ram it from the rear. When I re-applied power the Legacy engine took off as soon as power was applied. I have tried since then all my Legacy and TMCC engines and as soon as power is applied to the tracks they start moving. I checked the connection to the track and it is fine, I even tried moving it to the test bench connecting it there and no Legacy control there either. I no longer get the charging lights when power is applied to the unit, and only get one green light. This unit has been back to Lionel for the charging unit problem but it has worked flawlessly since it was returned. any help appreciated.

Well, on the surface it sounds like the base died. However, did you check to make sure the wire from the base is still properly connected to the outside tracks? Are you saying that when you put the remote into the cradle you don't see the expected charging lights? Is the charger enabled by the switch on the back of the base?
The base only shows one green light when it's idle, do you see the red light flash when you spin the dial on the CAB2?
My guess is the base needs to go back.
Thanks John for your input as I don't have a clue with Legacy, but the connection to the track is solid as I connect to the TIU outputs which sits right next to the Legacy base. Checked them with my meter also. I get the three lights on powering up the Legacy green orange red then back to green, and no charging lights. They have always been on and were on when I started running the other day but not now. Since I don't know without looking in the book where to turn off the charging unit, I guess it's still in the on position. When I spin the red dial I get a red flashing light. When I put power to the track with any TMCC or Legacy engine on the track it powers up and starts forward. It does respond to the direction button of the Z4K, however with DCS engines on the track you really don't want to hit that lol! I took the Legacy into the shop room and hooked it up to the test track and get the same results. Every Legacy/TMCC engine I have starts forward as soon as power is applied to the tracks.
Paul, give me a call.
As heard on Star Trek... "It's dead Paul".
If you have put it on a short test track, connected the base to the outside rail, and they still all come up in conventional, I'm not sure there is anything else you can do.
I'm assuming you are powering the base on first, right?
Some folks have reported the the lead to the U binding post inside the units have come off the binding post. Not sure if you want to open it up but it may save a trip back to Lionelville.
Thanks Marty, I may take a look there, but Lionel is so good with these warranty repairs it's no big deal to send it off to Mike's people.
Good idea, I guess I'd have to wonder how that would happen unless he was at least moving the base or connection.
The fact that it happened while nothing was being moved mechanically suggests that it's an electrical issue. However, anything's possible, I'm sure we've all seen that.
Paul,
Change to a different grounded outlet.
Same thing happened to me.
Dead as a doornail.
A grounded outlet suddenly had ground issues.
Sounds kooky, I know.
Changed outlets and all was fine.
Scrappy
Thanks Scrap but I tired a different outlet when I moved it to the test bench, different room completely.
I had the same problem legacy engines starting in conventional send it back to lionel
Got the email that my Legacy unit is en route back, no explanation in the email of what was fixed. UPS tracking shows Monday delivery.
There should be a repair slip with it that says something, though it's not always very illuminating.

The repair slip said they replaced the charging unit PCB, (which was working fine), and replaced a fuse/BOURNS/SMT/1.50 Amp 60 Volt." Matched software for v1.51-Tested
It works fine now, would love to know why it just stopped sending signal or how the fuse could blow.

Reading this topic makes me wonder if I got a bad base right out of the box.
