Hi folks, I just got a 4-8-4 Rock Island. It is my first engine with a circuit board in the tender. This engine has never been run, original factory dob of grease on armiture shaft and axle gear. Got it running great, but no smoke. Trouble shot to bad or blown fuse from E  unit to smoke unit lead. Why is this fuse installed?  I cut the fuse out and wired direct to smoke unit. Lionel must have put this in for a reason. Please help edumincate this post war guy.

Marty is right in that the fuse was first used on the 1981 Norfolk & Western J loco.

My only guess is that the smoke unit in the J/Northern was the first high-voltage PLASTIC smoke unit. Plastic smoke units had been used extensively on lower-end locomotives, but their operating voltage is lower. Perhaps an engineer at Lionel was being extra careful by requiring the fuse?

Note the part number is 600-8100-095 (or 8100-95) Fuse & Lead Assembly if you'd like to keep everything OEM.

I hope this helps.

Todd
