Thanks for posting that video Mike!

 

Looks like you guys did address the compressor sound issue from the first run, great job on that.  And the fidelity is certainly top notch.

 

Now for the downside:

 

Quilling feature aside, the whistle sound is still off for the cab forward unfortunately.  In fact, the whistle is even more off the mark in tone and pitch than the original 2005 release, which frankly perplexes me.

 

Looks like the radio "Dispatch" sounds are still here to stay unfortunately in Lionel's steam locomotives.  I suppose it's fortunate that's user-selectable for those that would rather do without that feature, but the question is can you do the shutdown sequence in Legacy without having the dispatch dialogue or is still carried over from the TMCC days?  With my TMCC version of the cab forward, I resort to putting a battery in the tender and killing track power so it does the shutdown sequence without the dispatch chatter; was hoping with Legacy you wouldn't have to do that anymore.

Maybe Mike will chime in and clarify if the sound set as heard in this model is specific to the "Daylight" paint scheme model and if a separate, more prototypical sound set will be used on the regular models?

I ordered one in Daylight from Charlie Nassau and Chris at York.  Looks like it was the right decision ... though I "got grief" from a couple of guys about the "prototypicality"  .

 

Just to show them, I'm going to run a nice consists of Daylight passenger cars behind this loc. when it comes home to my layout.

So, the comments regarding the whistle being incorrect has caught the attention of Rudy Trubitt, Lionel's very own "Railsounds Maestro" (or Sound Engineer as he humbly refers to himself!).

 

Rudy shot me an email I would like to share with you, the excerpt from his email:

 

"I used this video as a reference for the whistle sound I created for this release.
 
You can hear the whistle blow at 3:37 into the clip."
 
Please understand that we make every effort to be as thorough as possible in all aspects of our research when creating our high end steam and diesel locomotives. From the sounds to the decoration to the details that can be applied to the model (and still achieve full, functional operation. (Sorry scale guys, no prototypical brake working brake hardware underneath steam locos!).
 
Again, we truly hope you enjoy the pics and videos and soon the locomotives on your layout!

That video is obviously spot on, since it was recorded from the live movie sound. However, THAT video whistle doesn't seem to sound like the video of the new cab forward model, posted above. In my opinion, the real one is "higher pitched" when compared to the model.

The engine looks great (the all black will look better in my opinion) but the fantasy scheme is surprisingly more appealing than I thought it would be.

 

The compressor sounds are way cool....great job.  Comparing the whistles in both the links you posted, well they sound pretty darn close to me.  The different pitches in the quilable toy are going to be so much fun to play with.  Clearly you can not please them all, but something tells me you already know that (and you have no desire to do so anyway).  Clearly you will please the vast majority with this model and it will undoubtedly sell out.  Keep up the great work!

I've listened carefully to all of the sounds mentioned above now, and the Lionel whistle sounds pretty good to me.

 

Don't forget that, like any sound, whistles will sound different according to the location. A whistle in the open air can sound quite different to that in an enclosed space. You also have to allow for doppler effects, and even the fidelity of the recording itself.

 

I would say that Lionel have done a wonderful job with this locomotive, and I would dearly love to have one in my collection. 

I suspect that since this is a non VL model, the sound file will be the same for ALL the AC-12's.
 
I think the sound is good enough for my taste, but do the chuffs go in and out of sink? I think that would be very typical of Most articulated locos and hence it would be required with such a beautiful model...
 
One more thing, I am fairly new to this forum but I applaud Lionel rep to answer some of our questions. I wish all O scale mfr would do the same. It would be a win-win for all!!!!

First, I want to thank Mike R for posting the photos and video and for engaging with the community. This is a great thing to do and it really enhances Mike's and Lionel's standing. 

 

Second, I'm going to sail against the wind on the Daylight painted Cab Forward. I just don't care for it. I am a big Cab Forward fan; I have three of them (an MTH with PS/2 and two 3rd Rail brass ones). The Daylight paint job just looks funny to me on a Cab Forward. I think the Cab Forward would look better if it were done like SP 3000, an unstreamlined 4-4-2 that was painted in Daylight colors for the San Joaquin Daylight. That engine was left mostly black, with the tender in Daylight colors. Lionel made a model of it around 2000.

 

The Daylight paint scheme might look good on an AC-9, which has a skyline casing. The AC-9 would look like a giant Daylight GS engine. 

 

However, it looks like I'm in the minority here, which is a good thing for Lionel. Looks like the Daylight Cab Forward will be a hit, if the responses in this thread are any indication.

Thanks for the pics and videos, Mike. I am not a rivet counter and normally don't go for the fantasy paint schemes (I passed on the grey hound UP 9000). but I just love how this scheme was done. The Daylight paint was done in the right amount and design. The daylight colors AND the addition of the whistle steam pushed me over and I am glad I ordered it.  Can't wait to add her to my growing fleet.

This has been really interesting following all of the posts regarding the introduction of the Daylight Edition of the Cab Forward by Lionel. What was particularly interesting was the number of orders received for the Daylight Edition far outnumber the orders for the prototypical version. The thread I started this week about color influencing purchase decisions sure makes a valid point as evidenced by the apparent success of this engine in the marketplace.

 

If Mike Reagan is not officially part of the Lionel sales effort, he should be. By starting this thread with the wonderful photos and video of this superb engine, anyone who was on the fence, probably isn't anymore. I was part of this group until I placed my order today.

I've just received a beautiful set of Shasta Daylight 18" coaches from Nassau Hobby. They may still have some left if you are quick. (Catalogued in 2010) 

Mike, keep up the great job you are doing for Lionel. It looks like a winner to me. No sooner then I saw it at Lionel's event I knew I was going to order one each of the black & daylight. My AC-12 from 2005 is my favorite steam locomotive, at least for now. I'm one who likes to have some color in my trains so the new daylight AC-12 will be a welcome addition to my roster.

FYI, I will not be ordering the engine but I do have the GS-2 issued earlier. 

I don't see the irony. Fantasy paint scheme or not, blue, yellow, whatever, him or I look for paint consistency.  Simply he's just concerned whether the Daylight colors will be the same shade to match other Lionel daylight products.  I think the answer is yes if they are coming out of the same factory. Makes sense that they would use the same paint across their the board. If it was from another manufacturer/brand (i.e. MTH or 3rd Rail) then probably different shades of Daylight colors. So, no there is no irony at all

No offense Mike. I have the earlier cars and they some of the nicest 18" cars out there. That said, MTH is releasing cars this month in both the early and late lettering schemes. They might be worth checking out. I have ordered a pair to make a longer train.

 

 

I don't know if the two releases of Lionel cars came from the same factory but in any event they don't match each other. If the cars were released at the same time as the engine you might expect a match but if they aren't made for a couple of more years then its a matter of luck.

Thanks for looking at the posts. Glad we could get some images and video uploaded before the weekend for everyone to see the loco, we (Lionel) are all very proud of how the entire team has pulled together to make this project a success. We plan to try to keep this type of thing ongoing; showing off photos and video (when applicable) of our new products. 

 

It is important to us that everyone within the consumer and dealer community understands that our products are researched, designed, developed (electronics & sounds) and subsequently manufactured by a very dedicated team of individuals inside Lionel who rarely get much / any external credit for their hard work towards the success of Lionel products (which ultimately translates into the enjoyment of our products by our customers).

 

Great job everyone!! (within Lionel) for a job well done!

This is why Lionel it has been my pleasure to be a Lionel supporter over the years. Like any business, there have been times when things didn't go perfectly, but all in all with the kind of moves Lionel is making as to advance our hobby, we have a lot to look forward to.
