Lionel 6017 A.T.&S.F. caboose

I think the -225 is the box number for the caboose.

After some research......Nope, the box number is -236.  So I'm thinking whatever price guide lists a -225 is in error, as I can't find any reference to a -225 for that specific caboose.

That's what I was hoping anyway. I got it with a 223 Santa Fe F unit A & B. It has great colors and looks like barely been used. 

Did you get any other cars, or just the engines and caboose?

6014 Orange Bosco car that is bright and crisp also, a 3419 minus the helicopter, 6343 barrel ramp car with have the guard rail missing and no barrels, and a 3665 minuet man missile car missing roof & inner parts.

None of those cars were part of the only cataloged set (according to the Greenberg Guide).  That would be set #11385, listed as being made in 1963, The Santa Fe Space Set.  Your caboose is most likely the -235 version.  Also the "B" unit is listed as a 218C.  There were probably many uncataloged sets at that time using the 223 ABs as the motive power.

Yeah I looked it up and it had some expensive ( now ) cars to it. 

The 6017-225 number quoted in the Price Guide is completely wrong.  This is just one of many mistakes listed from a “Price Guide”.  Early mistakes keep getting perpetuated, year after year.  The 6017-235 (RED) A.T. & S.F. Caboose was only issued in the Catalogued Set #13018; Uncatalogued Set #9656, in 1962 only.  The actual box number listed in Schmid’s Authoritative Guide is (6017-235 S.  There were only 7600 cabooses (6017-235), made for both Sets, making it a little harder to find, but I wouldn’t consider Scarce.

Dug for a little more info. 6017-225 is the unboxed caboose. 6017-235 is the boxed version. Same car.

Surprisingly, The caboose in the 223 set had a box. The -225 unboxed came in 2 sets with red Texas Special 211 Alcos.

Chuck, Where did you verify that info from??  I don’t see it in any of my Guide books, where that is mentioned.  The only place I find the -225 number is Greenberg’s Price Guide.  Just my own curiosity.

Chuck, Thanks for the reply, as I went back and looked it up myself.  It appears in Sets 19115 & 19133, both for 1962 only, led by the 211 Texas Special.  In theory, knowing the fact that  Schmid had the actual documentation, to list the caboose with the number 6017-225, the caboose would have been the 6017-235 for anyone looking for the RED A.T & S.F., compared to the typical Grey issue.  I have to agree that the unboxed sets, listed above, have the designation of 6017-225.

I went and looked up the set 9656 and most of the components came with what I bought. I got the 223,and 218C, the 3419 helicopter launching car ( minus helicopter in my set ) also missing the turbo missile firing car, 6448 exploding box car, I do have ( kinda) the Minuteman missile firing car,( missing roof pieces and the guts on the inside) and the caboose. I think I might have a extra minuteman missile firing car, and one point I had two of the turbo launching cars so I may have that also.
