I'd like to get the smoke working in this engine.  There is only a small amount of smoke in neutral.  But if lift the wheels holding my hand with full throttle I have all kinds of smoke. It has TMCC but i'm running traditional with an original ZW.   I also tried a cw80.

I really can't find one or know if this is correct? Fairbanks-Morse Train Master series model K-Line K2438-0857CC Diesel Locomotive #857 Lionel 691RES3W22 22 Ohm 3 Watt  (i know original is 27 ohm)  I'm not sure this will fix the problem.  I have replaced batting wick, checked all the wire connections.

Pretty stumped.  Thanks for your help.

Since it sounds like you're running in conventional mode, how about a sure-fire fix?

Get a few of the KBF404 4A Bridge Rectifier parts from Digikey.

Wire them like this.  For each bridge component, you drop the voltage applied to the motor about 1.5 volts.  Normally two or three of these in series with the motor will give enough additional voltage to the smoke resistor to solve the problem.
