I've never used the Base/Cab2 before.  What functions can you access with the Cab2 that aren't available on the Cab3 App?

What works correctly on the CAB2 vs. CAB3  is the question.    There is a list of problems still with the CAB3.   The CAB3 has been in work 2+ years, 6+ months since release and I can't trust running my 773 with it.

@Dadified Thanks for making this video. I’ve had my preordered Base 3 since its release. Other than the quirky app, I’ve been happy with it overall. I just can’t get used to using an app to run trains. I’ve been considering buying the Cab 1L for a couple months now. Your video has answered a few of my questions. Now that a few months have passed, there’s a few options in using the app vs. the remote I hardly use, like the lighting features, extended start up/shut down, etc… Once the power is on and app set up, I just run trains like you would do. If at times I want to access any special functions, I can always revert back to the app.

I do have a couple questions please before I purchase a Cab 1L:

I use the roll and stop function often when coupling, is that available with the 1L? If not, how responsive is the orange wheel for crawling?

I believe I saw it on your video, when you hit direction does it stop the engine and automatically reverse the lighting?

I assume I can access any of my engines id #’s stored in the Base 3 and run multiple engines?

I have a few command switches programmed, can I access them like I do with the Cab 3?

Is there a start up and shut down button?

Can the Cab 1L be used and someone else using the Cab 3 app at the same time?

Thank you in advance, Gene

There are no RR speeds in a Cab1L so no roll but the dial has detentes so it fairly easy to get slow speed.  Unfortunately without a display nailing a speed step 1 will take some practice.

Yes

I assume I can access any of my engines id #’s stored in the Base 3 and run multiple engines?

Yes

I have a few command switches programmed, can I access them like I do with the Cab 3?

Yes

Is there a start up and shut down button?

Yes button 3 (startup) there are some caveats, and button 5 (when not in motion ) will shut down.

Can the Cab 1L be used and someone else using the Cab 3 app at the same time?

Yes but I would not recommend trying to control the same engine at the same time.

Thank you in advance, Gene

Here is the manual for the Cab1L included with the Base1L. It is more complete than the manual Lionel has online for Cab1L alone.

With practice the cab3 app is very usable. What I have done to prevent the train racing off the track when accidentally swiping up on the speed control is set the speed limit for your engine on the app. Another tip I discovered is that you can add LC engines to the legacy side of the app and for the most part you are able to access all the features as well, this eliminates switching back and forth. One thing to remember though is that you will not be able to use the LC remote until you remove the LC engine from the legacy side of the app. I also have been able to run both my Cab1L and Cab1 with the Base3. In order to use the Cab1 I had to connect the Cab1 base to an SER2 board and then connect that to the Base3. I as well do not have the Cab2 and when searching for one I felt is was way too pricey for a used unit and base. Since I already had the and Cab1 it was much cheaper to just purchase the Base3, SER2 board, Cab1L remote and Powermaster (can run conventional trains this way). although I paid last years price on sale for the Base3, I see it has gone up $100 this year. Not sure if I would have done it for the current price. So am I happy with the Base3 and Cab3 app? Overall yes although as others have stated the Cab3 app leaves a lot to be improved upon. One other note is that I turn on the track power using either the Cab1L or Cab1 remote TR+1.

I noticed that as long as you have the LionChief remote turned on before the Base3 has a moment to boot up that you can still use the remote.  Once the Base3 is running, it'll only work through the CAB-3 App or whatever Cab-1L or Cab-2 you're using.  We added a Lionchief Santa Fe FT set at Christmastime to pull these nice aluminium cars and being able to use it through our Base3 has been nice but my son or other guests do like to use it's specific remote sometimes for ease of use.

Looks like Marty did a great job getting to these before I could!  But I do still want to weigh in on a few of them.

While the 1L doesn't have numeric controls for crawling, it's still pretty easy to crawl.  A slight turn on the throttle wheel will get it inching along.  Works great with some of my newer Legacy engines, especially the SW-8 switcher.  I hardly noticed it was moving at first!

Yes, when I press the direction change button it stops the engine in it's tracks and is ready to reverse.  The reverse light (if it has one) will come on.

For the Engine IDs, they'll all remain.  In fact, I took one of my Lionmaster Challengers to my local club to run.  Used their TMCC Base 1, punched in the ID, and ran it there.  Came home and kept running it with the same ID.  That feature remains tied to the engine.

I'm glad Marty chimed in because I've never used programmed switches.  So we both learned something about those today.  I only have one switch that could be programmed and I've just been lazy and haven't done that yet.

I do like that any Cab-1L, Cab-2, or Cab-3 App can work with the Base3.  There's a limit to how many Cab-3 Apps can use the Base 3 at the same time, but nothing you'll likely run into at home.  Recently when my Nephew and his family were visiting, he was using the Cab-3 App, my son was using a train with a Universal Remote, and I was using the Cab-1L.  Three separate trains with 3 separate remotes operating on the same track.  And I'm happy to report: no crashes!  I do like that the physical remotes have the emergency stop button so I can monitor my younger engineers should they get careless or have a close call.

This is good to know, one of my concerns without having a step 1 roll feature.

Yes, when I press the direction change button it stops the engine in it's tracks and is ready to reverse.  The reverse light (if it has one) will come on.

So if I’m at a crawl with an engine, it seems that the direction button could function the same as the stop/reset which is to the left of roll, which stops the engine instantly and sets to opposite direction.

For the Engine IDs, they'll all remain.  In fact, I took one of my Lionmaster Challengers to my local club to run.  Used their TMCC Base 1, punched in the ID, and ran it there.  Came home and kept running it with the same ID.  That feature remains tied to the engine.

I have 14 switches, 8 are wired remotes and the other 6 I use the app, which works perfectly.

This is what I meant about using the app and Cab 1L at the same time when my granddaughter visits.

Thank you for your help,

Gene

Marty, I reviewed the online manual and I have a couple questions about accessing the numeric keypad with the aux1 button.

When addressing an engines id#, do you need to press aux1 first before 3 for start up?

When an engine is moving, do you need to press aux1 first to access the numeric functions?

Just trying to understand the steps needed for basic functions before I purchase one.

Thanks, Gene

The first time you startup this engine in a session, once addressed, any of the non numeric keys will cause it to startup.  If you shut it down without removing power, then address it, push any non numeric key (even horn it won't sound because it's shutdown), then 3.  Hope that makes sense.

When an engine is moving, do you need to press aux1 first to access the numeric functions?

No.  If you hit AUX1 and say 2 you typically get a negative response from crew talk.  Same with AUX1 7 for tower comm.  If you don't press AUX1 typically you get an all clear or good to proceed.  There are a few functions that require AUX1 but that's mostly setting smoke levels and such.

Just trying to understand the steps needed for basic functions before I purchase one.

With the help from you, your video and @MartyE, I did purchase the Cab1L and it came in yesterday. It’s a perfect combination with the Base 3 and does everything I need for running trains. The dial throttle control is so much better than the slide throttle on the app and it’s sensitive enough to get the roll motion I questioned. I’ve welcomed the functionality of apps with my iPhone and iPads but having a remote in your hand is the ticket! It was easy enough to set up the quilling whistle function on my Legacy’s and learn functions of the remote. I’ll continue programming with the app and change lighting if needed.
