I got my black Legacy SP Cab Forward cab # 4294. I do not have a layout, so I put it on a short test track. This one started right up and smoked well. BUT, once in a while I get the dreaded blinking cab light!!!! I get it about 50% of the time. When it happens, I shut down the loco, wait a minute or so and then try again, some times is does it again and some times it work perfect again. I may have a marginal smoke unit. I hope not, I do not want to send it back in fear of shipping damage. I am not disappointed even though this is my second Lionel Loco. the first one is a SP daylight and that one worked perfect out of the box. So I guess I have a 50% failure rate.....Just kidding, not fair, its a very small sample.

anyway, here are some photos.

Can some one help me post a video? I tried and it looked like it worked on my other post but the video did not show up.

How many blinking lights are you seeing? I assume it's the smoke element or fan sequence rather than the main drive binding.

Have you set this up under your Legacy system yet or are you still running this and your Daylight in conventional using a Z4000?  If you are using Legacy I'd try a soft and then a full reset if you still have this problem after entering the engine info in the Legacy system. The instructions are in the cab forward manual. This worked with the one Legacy engine I have which had the blinking issue.

Also, while most people report having no issue using the Z4000 with Lionel Legacy/Vision Line engines, I noticed a difference in performance when I changed to a ZW-L and was also told that 3rd Rail engines' smoke units run better if you don't use the MTH transformer.

Anyway, a call to Lionel is probably in order if you can't cure the problem yourself.

Three blinking then stop and repeat. Z4000 was used. I just got my Legacy but it has software rev 1.2! it is NIB but old stock I guess. I want to update to 1.52 once I modify the blue modules to black ones. Or, can I use it as is?

Problem: my room does NOT have grounded outlets, is this a potential Legacy problem? I just test the locos on a short track or on rollers when applicable.

#4294 is not doing it the blikny any more now, I am getting steam all the time. I wonder if the smoke motors "broke in" and now they run OK? we'll see...Thx for your help

You better check your manual (I don't have mine on hand) but I think three lights blinking indicates a smoke fan motor problem. I agree that it is possible that running the engine a while has broken in the fan motor.

The absence of a ground connection will adversely affect the Legacy signal but possibly not enough to make a difference if you are running a small layout in a confined space.

I think you ought to update your Legacy system but it might be a good idea to get used to operating under it first before you try an update. I think that with the version you have got you won't be able to use some advanced lighting features and you might find that some lights that should be on at startup are off. This is usually cleared by a reset.

Posting a video in the opening post of a thread is a PITA...not sure why it's different from putting it in a "reply".

When you go to YouTube, and hit the "Share" tab, then select the "embed" ...copy that long link.

Then once you click the film strip here in the body of your post, click on the "Source" tab at the top. Paste that "Embed" link there. Then insert at the bottom.

I don't know why, but that's the only way I can get the video to show up in the intial thread post.

Thx for the help guys.

Yes, Three blinks mean main stack fan problem. I powered the loco on and off many times now and so far no more error code. I suspect the fan motor ran "in" and now it seems fine. The smoke output from both systems is excellent. I am relieved.

I read somewhere that the legacy 1.2 has to be updated to 1.3 before it is possible to go to 1.52. I also need to get the USB cable adapter to plug inyo my Apple Macbook.

Ok, I will try the video tips you mentioned. Again thx a bunch
