I am posting this because this is my first major disappointment in Lionel.  I own a 6-38066 TMCC Shay.   The drive shaft broke and the motor would race.  I sent to Lionel and they repaired the drive shaft but  told me " There is a problem with the 3 cylinder shay motor, and we do not have any replacements for it.  There is nothing we can do to get it to run better than it is now."

It runs fine in forward but in reverse the motor races and the engine barely moves.

WOW   why not offer me a new Legacy shay at a reduced price and take old shay as trade.

Where is the customer service?????

That's about a 10 year old locomotive isn't it? I think it was first cataloged in 03 or so. Besides Lionel service had made it quite clear if its older than 3 years old its hit or miss on parts

Why would you expect any company to cover or offer you a discount on something that old and built by a company that isn't even in business any longer?

It's not that I don't feel your pain, I have an even earlier version of the Shay that I love but run very rarely because of drive problems. It was fixed one but I was told back in the early 2000's that if it broke again I was SOL

They may not know there is a problem with a part until years go by. The main thing, though, is that - as most people are aware - long-terms parts availablilty disappeared when the highly detailed scale stuff started coming out, which everyone seemed to want.

It's impossible to keep thousands of parts for long periods because most of these scale engines now have unique parts. That's one of the tradeoffs with getting highly scaled engines with myriad parts to them. Ask what you wish for, you may get it, as the old saying goes.

BTW, try getting a part for an appliance more that about 5-7 years old. They told me recently at an appliance parts place that a woman came in looking for a part for a 3-year-old KitchenAid dishwasher, and it was no longer available. The last two times I looked for parts for some appliances of mine, they were long gone. You can also forget getting parts for most electronics after a very brief period, and there are countless other examples. It's a throw-away society now.
