Not sure if i'm in the right forum but I bought NOS Lionel GP-38 with sound. It has worked very well past 3 months. Today I ran the engine and there is no sound, however the engine runs fine and all the lights work. Is this something I can fix or do I have to send it in. It had, start up sound, diesel horn, bell, and engineer to dispatch talk. Thanks for any help

Hit aux1- 1, move volume control, check the RS/SS switch and try a reprogramming.

Have all sounds stopped, or just the engine/crew sounds?
If this is a conventional locomotive with sound, then you may wish to check the sound on/off switch, and also possibly the volume control, just in case you have accidentally turned the sound off.
Thanks I will try these when I get off work
No volume control, and it only has one switch sound on or off, so i turned it on off several times and still no horn or crew talk but engine and all lights still work, any sugggestions, sound board out??
Disconnect your speaker, and using a 9v battery and jumper wires attach the positive side to the speaker positive side. Attach the jumper to the negative side of the speaker . Now take the loose jumper and touch negative side of the battery, if you get a click sound the speaker is good, no click and the speaker bad. If you have a continuity meter you can check with that also.

It is a GP-38 from a Lionel Earnhardt Jr. set. #7-11005
I have had problems in the past with NASCAR GP-38's. I am betting the trainsound board is bad. This was one of the first engines with trainsounds and the sound cards have flaws. Alaska GP-7's of the same vintage have the same problems.

Same here with 2 Nascar engine sound boards failing. Both within 3 hours of each other. I agree sound board fried.
So what steps are involved and what costs are involved to replace the board with an improved one?
The replacement board # is 691-ISND-GDL. I am out of stock on these now. I can order for you or you can order direct from Lionel. The price is 45.00 from either.
Uh...the -first- thing you do in almost all these "runs but no sounds" is remove
the shell and seat all the boards.
Really. Had it happen. Nothing wrong but a loose board. Especially on locos
that have been handled a lot, or shipped recently.
Not always, or even typically, the problem, but always check the SIMPLE things first.
They're usually free, too.
But, that's just me.
