Lionel smoke unit help!

I have a Lionel Polar Express berkshire with whistle steam that when I use the smoke unit for about a minute it will trip the circuit breaker on my MTH Z-750. It is weird because when I turn the unit on it will still run but just after a minute or until I blow the whistle it trips the breaker. It still produces smoke but it then shorts out. I looked and all the wire connections are fine and I do not see what could be causing the short. Could this be a bad smoke unit wicking? Did I burn the smoke unit out? I know it is not the whistle steam motor because i seems to work fine when the smoke unit is off. I will probably take it to my LHS tommorow but I want to see if I can solve the problem first.
