The first run of the Lionel scale S-2 had a couple of noticeable defects: Odyssey surge at startup speeds and easily broken tunnel pantographs.

Hopefully the Legacy version will have corrected these issues plus the swinging bell is a nice touch.

The surging issue will be taken care of since it'll be Legacy.

We're looking at the pantograph design to see how we can reinforce it to keep it from easily breaking.

Will the rolling stock be tinplate as well, or just the S-2?

As I understand it, NEITHER will be tinplate.  The S-2 was catalog'd as being die-cast and the rolling stock as plastic.  But since Lionel has labeled this as "tinplate inspired", we're surmising the finish will be glossy paint in bright tinplate colors.

Perhaps Lionel can chime in on this, because there still seems to be some confusion around this offering -- hence the "need to see it before buying it" comment earlier in the thread.

Dave: THANK YOU for your response. Sounds like the Legacy S2 will be a great loco! Back in 1958-59 I worked across the street from Grand Central Terminal in the Lincoln Building. When I took my lunch in the terminal at Nedick's, I would visit the inbound bumper posts where you could usually find an S2 spotted there. First time I realized the real thing had those SMALL pantographs just like the prewar models by Ives and Lionel! At that time I did not know these were only for intermittent use in the GC tunnel complex!

This is correct. The engine is die cast and the cars are abs. They are all scale and will be painted in prewar colors like in the catalog image, and will have brass plaques where appropriate.

Mr. Olson, it is good to see someone from Lionel stepping in to answer questions for these guys. It is something important that has been lacking. I think it will benefit Lionel greatly to show participation. I don't buy new trains so it doesn't matter much to me, but by all I've read here it means a lot to most of them. There has been communication issues I understand.

Just looked at the Lionel site and it says this set is sold out.

...

If this was a BTO set, then that would make sense.  It's sold out from Lionel's perspective... as all BTO items are nowadays.  However, the real question will be how many sets did dealers order "on spec"?  For folks liking really colorful trains, this could very well be a popular "sleeper" item after all.

Assuming it is indeed "sold out", I suppose that implies the set has gone -- or will be going -- into production.  So that should ally some early concerns that the set might not make it to production.

Lionel seems to be promoting this set as some sort of hybrid, which it clearly is not. The engine, though nicely done, is NOT tinplate regardless of its livery and the cars are resin-molded and NOT tinplate. A little too weird for this tinplate enthusiast; I will stick with my REAL tinplate THANK YOU very much!

PS: I would consider one of the other proper S2's being offered. The hopefully improved pantographs and the swinging bell are pluses!

I hope that's the case. I pulled the trigger last night. We'll see if I get one.
