I'm having an issue with a VL loco and tender (GS-5, SKU 2031570) where both drawbars, but especially the tender's, got damaged falling off a shelf. Other damage is only cosmetic, the engine functions exactly as it should but I think there is no signal between it and the tender as (1) the tender doesn't have sound, and (2) although the marker lights work, they don't change color and the reverse light does not come on.

I think that although I have bent the drawbars back into what I think is the right shape, possibly the signal connection between the loco and tender is misaligned or one of the IR bulbs has broken.

I have tried lining them up manually and looking for illumination in both of them but can't make out anything or get the tender sound to start. But I am actually not sure what to look for - I think that the IR beam is a kind of pink/blue when it  is transmitting, which I have seen on other Lionel wireless tether engines.

Any ideas how to diagnose this problem? I hope it isn't worse than I think, as in a board issue. Have tried a soft reset but not inputting a new engine ID. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hancock,

  1. Make sure that your CAB-2 Base is not powered.  Unplug it.
  2. Set the tender on the track without the locomotive.
  3. Apply power, variable power of maybe 15 VAC or so preferred, in order to power it up in conventional mode.

Do you hear the tender's start-up sounds immediately after doing this?

If the tender doesn't have any sound, it's not simply the IR link.  If the IR link is broken, the tender comes up in conventional mode and you'd hear the steam background idle sounds.

Actually, it does have faint steam sounds, or maybe its just white noise, immediately I switch on power at the bricks I use with a ZW-C and even with the CAB2 base powered on. (This is slightly odd because it happens with the ZW-C levers set to zero, which is not something I have seen before with any other engine.)

The loco doesn't act in a similar way, it functions as it should. But the tender doesn't answer any Legacy commands, like crew talk, marker light change or the reverse light coming on.

I have not tried it yet with the CAB2 base powered off but will do so.
