Lionel Z transformer whistle mod | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum

Hello, I have had this old Lionel Z 250 watt transformer in need of restoration, so I was wondering if I can carefully drill 2 small holes to install push buttons and an internal whistle diode. My control panel is pretty small so I don't have much room for an external whistle controller. Has anyone else done this mod? Thanks.

You won't have the 5V AC boost coil. Lionel did make push button control boxes you can use:

You could recreate the same circuit within your Z transformer using something like 6A 200 PRV Axial diodes:

Glued a couple of those buttons to the sides of my LWs to make the sounds work on my trolleys and they work great.
