Bruk, I agree with you.  Before throwing in the towel he should do the reset with the AUX-1 then press 1 for steam.  If none of the restore code works, I would reseat the R4 and give it a go.  I have seen some R4 boards go on the early Legacy as I know you have.    A smart move on his part would be to pull the R4 board and mail it up to you to throw in your board tester.

I agree with Marty. Try and reset the engine first. If that Doesn't work, I would remove the shell (I believe there are 6 screws for that engine), and re-seat the Radio Board. If nothing else works what you could also try doing is if you have any other LEGACY engines that have a R4LC inside you can swap them and see if there is any function thru both locos.

Thanks guys. It's my only legacy loco. Now the headlight and smoker quit.  I think I will need to find a shop.

Definable the R4LC then. If you send it to a shop...I think the closest one to you is Eastside Trains in Kirkland, Washington, . If you send it there and mark it attention ''Bruk Bannister'' I can work it for you once I get it.

Nice to have your own personal tech.   Maybe Bruk can do some customization while it's there.

The fact that all this stuff is dying sure sounds like the R4LC is falling out, so that would be my first check.  There are six screws for the Lionmaster Challenger to remove the boiler shell as Bruk says.

John, I have run into several bad R4 boards in the past year.  I am so glad Lionel came out with the RCMC board system and dumped the modular boards.   For those who have never been to Eastside trains in Kirkland Washington,  it is one fine shop with people who know what they are doing.  Not a small store.  Lots to see.

It certainly could be a bad board Marty, but I've found more of them rattling around inside the engine than I have found defective.   I figured that's the first check.  Obviously, I just stick them in my test rig and test them if I have any doubt.

I pulled the boiler.  I did not see any obvious disconnections. Thanks.

I think Marty's diagnosis is probably correct in that case.
