I have several extremely nice 800 series freight cars and would like to know which locomotive would be appropriate. I have seen several engines and lean towards black finish with copper trim, green frame and red cow-catcher. Lionel is preferred over MTH - just trying to keep it original as can be. Thank you in advance. Chuck242

Chuck,
The engine would depend on which cars you have, when they were made and what colors they are. If you could post a picture or two of the cars I can let you know which engine to search for.
Thanks for the opportunity - this is a quick test to see if I can attach thumbnail photo. Standby

Chuck here is quick pic from one of my catalogs with the suggested engines for the 800 series cars. If you have a particular engine in mind with a few specific cars I can look at the various catalogs to see if that combo was a set. BTW nice prewar pieces.

First, nice collection of tinplate you have there.
If you're looking for a loco for the early 800-series cars at the bottom, you could go with a prewar 260-E. Those cars were also sold with the 251 electric, and if I'm not mistaken, the 262-E steamer.

Also, check the journals, copper older nickel newer.
A 260-E with12 wheel tender would do nicely....
Chuck i use our 260E to pull the 800 series cars or whatever i would like to run them otherwise.
Looking at your posted thumbnail i see there a 263E with 810 crane and other 800 series cars behind it.
Gents, looks like the consensus is the 260-E, most likely with nickel journals. Question, is the 260-E a large engine, similar in size to the 263 pictured at the head of the Blue Comet?
And so, another hunt begins.... And what to sell to finance the chase? (I'll move a few 2800 and 8800 series cars).
You folks really helped me today, thank you very much.

Yes, the 260E is a large engine with the same size as a 263E.

The 260-E and 263-E are essentially the same engine with respect to size and overall appearance. Probably the most noticeable difference is the smoke box front; the one on the 263-E has class/marker lights, while the smoke box front used on the 260-E does not, but instead has small pockets for flags. The tenders are also slightly different; the 260-T did not have a whistle and was offered with both 4-wheel and 6-wheel trucks, and the 2263W had a whistle and was fitted with 6-wheel trucks only.
