Try Kross Hardware on Little East Neck Rd. in Babylon. Ask for Tommy
I was told Kross was a good place to try. I'll put that one the list.
I think the antique shop SJC mentioned in East Hampton is the one I had read about. I didn't know that it was Standard Gauge. I'll see if I can find out about them.
Thanks for the tips.
Ed
First the bad news, Paul's Hobby shop is now closed. I did his repairs for years but he has closed his shop. SJC has given you a bit of old information on the Railroad Museum of Long Island (RMLI), it is now the home of the Lionel Visitor's center layout. The layout is running on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the summer from 10 am to 4pm. If you don't know how the layout works, the accessories on the layout are operated by push buttons that the visitors control, so if you have children it is a big thrill!! The museum also offers riders on the World's Fair Train , another great kids attraction. The G scale layout is also up and running. Check out the RMLI website for more details on the LIRR rolling stock.
Xtreme Hobbies, Deer Park Ave, Deer Park NY.
Dollhouse Junction in Ronkonkoma I believe is still around.
Kross is good is good too, but I think he is mostly MTH, Havent been there in a long time....
Since you have to drive through Nassau County to get to Suffolk, you would have a great visit at Nassau Hobby in Freeport.
Paul
Thank you Paul!
Nassau Hobby is good. If you want Williams go to Trainworld in Lynbrook. Bobby Bacalla was shot there.
Don't bother with Dollhouse Junction/Wrong Island Railroad. They have a decent operating layout, but he charges to see it. They have a very small inventory and charge full list.
Kross Hardware is pretty good, but they really don't have much on display. Most of their items are in the storage room upstairs with the layout. Tom is good guy and open to negotiation as long as your paying in cash. They do have a pretty decent inventory.
3 Guys Hobby in Smithtown is very small with little to no inventory.
Nassau Hobby, is the crown jewel of LI. They are always worth the trip and a great forum sponsor. Charlie is always one of the first to provide updates.
I don't deal with the guys in Lynbrook.
I have never been to Xtreme Hobbies in Deer Park, but have heard good things. There is also a Sonic right over there!!!
Wow, Thank You Ron! I'm Blushing!
Does Nassau Hobby have a door man to open the front door for you?
You want the job, Eddie?
Nassau Hobby is a great store, but please don't forget about Willis Hobbies in Mineola.
Stuart
Agree about Nassau, Charlie has a very good selection. I bought a very hard to find LIRR C420 from him about 3 months ago..Willis Hobbies is a great toy store and nice people. Trainland,is Trainland, the prices are great. It is a across the street from the LIRR and theor is a White Castle a block away. All 3 are worth a visit.
I'm sitting here with my Nassau Hobby shirt on. I visited there last year and Trainland. They are both great shops.
Ed,
Willis Hobbies in Mineola, and Trainland in Lynbrook are both good shops, but you have to make it a point to see Charlie and Chris at Nassau Hobby in Freeport. It's a great shop, with top notch service. Don't miss it.
Andy
Thanks Andy, we are expanding or sales floor by adding a new tile floor and two new islands for product as soon as we fix a lingering drain problem on our new roofs. We had a little set back recently with that 6 inch rain fall. The drains couldn't keep up and had some damage. Our POS system is next with "real time" inventory maint. Thanks again Charlie...
Where was that exterior picture of Trainland shot? (Perhaps a side view?) I haven't been on Long Island in quite some time. The front of the store didn't look anything Like that the last time I was there.
Hi Ed,
I highly recommend these two shops which are conveniently accessible via the Long Island Expressway:
> Xtreme Hobbies 1815 Deer Park Ave, Deer Park, NY 11729, 631-254-9873 has a good stock of MTH, Lionel and an operating Layout. This shop also has vintage Lionel on display, and some for sale.
> Wrong Island Railroad on Ronkonkoma Avenue in Ronkonkoma, http://wrongislandrailroad.com/ claims to have the largest stock of Lionel is Suffolk County. The store has a large operating layout (pay to see).
> I also recommend contacting the Long Island Toy Train Locomotive Engineers at http://littleclub.org/about/index.shtml Ask for George Faeth. they are in the know about O-gauge toy trains in Suffolk.
> Also contact http://rmli.us/RMLI/Visiting_Us.html which is situated in Riverhead. The RMLI has the Lionel Visitor's Center layout they imported from Michigan.
Thanks for the tips on hobby shops. as it turns put we are staying about 3 miles from Xtreme hobby so that will work out fine. Nassau hobby is a definite. I was there a few years ago and stopped in to see about a particular piece I was looking for. The gentleman who was waiting on me was very helpful in searching for the item which he thought they had in stock. I was impressed with the assistance they gave me.
Ed
Thank You Ed, Charlie and Chris
