I am now ready to make the country roadways for my layout. I have read several articles and watched a bunch of YouTube's to see how they make country roads. There are so many different techniques, I am a little confused about the easiest and best way to proceed. Some say use asphalt shingles; others say foam board; others use styrene; and others use masonite. Does anyone have a suggestion or an article to point me in the right direction?

360RPM - Here are some photos of my roads which are all asphalt roofing shingles. There are also some photos of the small town ( Patsburg ) street also paved with asphalt roofing shingles. Just thought I'd show several pics so you can get good idea of how the roofing shingle material looks on a layout. Good luck with whatever product you choose to go with. Happy holidays!!
I model the late 1940s - 1960. I grew up in a rural area where roads paved with tar and chipped stone roads were the standard. I only saw asphalt paved roads in the cities. The tar and chipped stone roads had dirt shoulders which were usually very narrow if at all.
Here is a country road which exists on the Mountain Division of my railroad.
Country road ( scroll down a few images to see this road before ground foam/brush/ fence was applied. )
Country road leading into a small town.
Asphalt roofing shingles cut to country road size before finishing the roadside brush, ground foam etc.
