but my daughter has her MTH rocket transport train!

She is finishing a year long stint working with Bastion Technologies on risk assessment for the Space Launch System at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, Alabama, and will be on her way to Stanford University to pursue a master’s degree in aeronautics and astronautics.  MSFC is primarily concerned with propulsion and played a major role in the development of the Saturn V.

This year, for her birthday, I gave Holly an MTH rocket transport set I bought from Jim Sutter and Jim’s Train Shop a number of years ago.   Holly took a car from the set to her work where it is getting “tagged” by America’s finest!

The first to apply his pen to the car was Barry “Butch” Wilmore, pilot of space shuttle Atlantis on STS 129 and a Navy pilot with 663 carrier landings.

Then Andy Allen got into the game at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Mr. Allen piloted STS 46 (Atlantis), STS 92 (Discovery), and was mission commander on STS 75 (Columbia).  Mr. Allen is working to transition Kennedy Space Center into a multi-user spaceport.

Next, the rocket transport car made it to the desk of  Robert Cabana, director of Kennedy Space Center.  Mr. Cabana was pilot of STS 41 (Discovery), STS 53 (Discovery), and commander of STS 65 (Columbia) and STS 88 (Endeavour).

Rocket transport will commence again soon from the shadow of Promontory Summit to the Kennedy Space Center as the Space Launch System draws closer to returning NASA to human spaceflight on the strength of America’s own rockets and best technology.

Neat car, great memento of her time there.

As My wife and I were driving up to the Golden Spike National Historic Site a few years ago. We passed that facility and wondered what that was. Thanks for clearing that up.

The solid rocket boosters are tested near the base of the Promontory Summit.  There is a rocket “garden” at that location with a Space Shuttle booster on display.

There is a loading facility some miles east of this location at Corinne, Utah (aka “Solid Rocket City”) where solid rocket booster segments are loaded onto rail cars for transport to and assembly at Kennedy Space Center.  The Space Launch System will continue to use solid rocket boosters as well as souped up versions of the Space Shuttle’s RS-25 engines.

I grabbed these two images of that facility off Google Earth. I see that we only passed a small section of the property before reaching the entrance to the Historic Site. We never got to the main structure before turning off. From the road it was a rather sinister looking series of out buildings. The pin is in the Golden Spike which is a real hidden gem in the middle of nowhere.

Here's a closer shot of the facility. It appears to be spread out and over four miles in length, and about two miles wide. I guess something like this is best done away from the neighbors. I hate the Fourth of July when my neighbors shoot off fireworks.

The Popular Mechanics article (linked in the 4th post above) takes you inside the facility.  As you travel NW from Ogden near the UP Tracks you see a facility to the right of the road just NW of Corinne, Utah for rail transport of SRB segments and other rocket/missile product.  Huge cars with large covers are seen outside the building and the loading area has a large fence surrounding it.  Corinne, Utah was the last “Hell on Wheels” town in the construction of the Union Pacific.

As Holly wraps up her week at Marshall with Stanford in her sight, the rocket transport continues to draw attention with autographs from:

Chris Ferguson, Pilot STS 115 (Atlantis), Commander STS 126 (Endeavour), and Commander STS 135 (Atlantis)

Eric  Boe, Pilot STS 126 (Endeavour) and Pilot STS 133 Endeavour

Nicole Mann - commercial crew with a great message - “The sky is NOT the limit!”  Ms. Mann is a graduate of the 2013 astronaut class and is assigned to the first flight of the Boeing Starliner.

Sunita Williams - mission specialist and flight engineer, STS 116 (Discovery) and mission specialist and flight engineer, STS 117 (Atlantis).

Huntsville, Alabama (home of Marshall Space Flight Center) is affectionately known as “Rocket City”.  The first thing you see when opening the door out of Holly’s apartment is a full scale Saturn V on the museum grounds where the below photos were taken.   Corinne, Utah - mentioned in a post above as the origin for the rocket transport train - calls itself “Solid Rocket City”.

Last year, for her birthday, I gave Holly a model of the Saturn S1b - predecessor to the Saturn V.  S1b had 9 successful launches including Apollo-Soyuz, Apollo 5, Apollo 7 and several Skylab missions.  Holly got to meet Fred Haise of Apollo 13 and he “tagged” her S1b model.

The S1b was also slated to be the launch vehicle for Apollo 1.  I will forever remember the sacrifice Ed White, Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee made for our space program.

Notch 6, please use any of the photographs you desire.  The photos with NASA personnel do not belong to me but were shared with Holly.  I took the photo of the Saturn V and the Promontory rocket garden.

She graduated high school as valedictorian in a 350 member class with straight As throughout high school then completed a degree in chemical engineering and music at the University of Missouri, graduating magna cum laude.  She summited Kilimanjoro in April and next it is on to Stanford at the end of the month.

Wow, she is definitely an achiever.  Your are certainly justified in your parental pride.

Sounds like she might be the one who can properly direct the rebuilding of that poor old Pennsylvania K4 4-6-2 that has been so badly mismanaged in previous failed attempts.

Thanks for the invite Larry!  I hope to take you up on that offer soon!  I wait with anticipation to see where Holly ends up following the master’s degree program in aeronautics and astronautics at Stanford.  She is quite interesting to follow.  Previously she worked at Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois, and got me in to see the Tevatron which has been rendered obsolete by the Large Hadron Collider.  I feel privileged to be able to follow the path she is making.

Thank you Portland Rose, yes, our kids, bless their hearts, take us all over the Country, even OverSeas...Thank You, please keep us informed...Although we were unable to have a daughter, we do have 6 sons and they are all great in their own way.  I sure enjoyed your pictures and Huntsville has an exceptional Space Center. I know Holly is your inspiration, I am so happy for you. By the way, I am retired, and your welcome anytime.  Happy Railroading...
