In the mid 50’s Marx was as usual trying to add more play value. A number of S-2 and a few E-7 diesels we’re equipped with Diesel Roar. They really just a vibrator and had no on-off switch. Only lasted a few years, they just weren’t loud enough to hear well over the normal track noise. Good attempt though.

Where does it mount? Could it be duplicated with off the shelf parts? I wonder how it would sound in one of their metal diesels....
On the S-2 it’s held in by two screws, one at the rear of the cab and one on top of the hood under the horn. On the E-7 it’s a single screw on the cab roof just behind the horns.

I think the American Flyer vibrators were the same as used in auto radios of the day, only without the case.

Very much the same as the Flyer.
Uh oh... I threw out a box of those about 20 years ago thinking they were nos telephone parts 😮
Likely Flyer parts as I don't recall Gramps ever working on even one Marx for folks, just Lionel and some AF every now and then (complaining about design the whole time, but still loving it 
)
