This is another UP Mikado that I bought "has no sounds". Nice engine and could sound great like the one I fixed last week. That's why I bought it...inexpensive since it had "no sound".

It had no IR board and no Power Supply in the tender. Missing screws, wrong screws, and missing tender steps.

I got the necessary boards and parts from Lionel and now I have steam sounds when the track power is turned on. Programmed the ID and features in TMCC with aux1 and 740, but no have whistle, chuff, bell, tower or cab talk, or rear tender light with reverse. The engine seems fine. Forward and reverse movement, blinking headlight when programming.

I have +5 vdc at the IR tender plug socket and pulses that change there with pushing buttons on the CAB2 for whistle, bell, chuffing when the wheels are moving, and reverse when going into reverse. So I take it that steam sounds means that something is working in the RS board...but not taking the programming? No whistle confirm, but do get the blinking head light when I set the ID# or when I "ID# aux1 740" under program. I am doing that with TMCC from the CAB2. Oh and the coil coupler doesn't work either. I did check most of the connections for continuity.

I did try the engine with the other tender from the one I fixed last week and all the sounds, etc. worked fine.

Maybe I need an RS board. Maybe that was the original issue when the former owner or ebay shop (that I bought it from) messed around with it. Do these boards go bad often? Maybe with derailments previous owner? Maybe it never worked...one of those new in the box, never tried? I guess I have to contact Lionel to exchange this board if necessary.

Yeaaa!

Put in a new power supply, mother board and AD20A IR board. I don't know what was originally wrong with it, but I did smoke the original power supply. The mother board was not expensive, so I figured why not? and the AD20A IR board was my main suspect. Anyway it all works now. I did not harm the RS board when I smoked the power supply.

Thanks for all the patient help.

Now on to my latest ERR Cruise Commander install in a Williams GP9.
