Does anyone modify rolling stock to make it more prototypical? For instance, adding correct grab irons, or stake pockets, or real wood decking on a flat car, just to name a few examples. I know many modelers scratch build cars, but this seems like a reasonably cost effective way to gussy up an otherwise less then prototypical car.

I like to put wood decking on flat cars, or paint the deck if there's already molded-in wood grain, but I hardly ever get that far down my to-do list. Repairs, layout building, electronic upgrades, and work for the toy train museum take higher priority.

I usually buy the higher grade scale cars, which already have correct grab irons, etc. One thing that is a must is to add the appropriate chocks and/or chains when I add a load to an empty flat car.
