I have been working on a PS-1 to PS-3 upgrade of a 1997 MTH Rail King Allegheny for the last four days or so.

I completed the upgrade yesterday and did a test in conventional mode-all went well.

I found what appear to be the correct sound and chain files on the MTH website-I installed those files this morning.  The loading process stalled a couple of times for both the sound and chain files but, using "Retry" they ultimately completed.

The locomotive runs well and sounds GREAT, but I have two issues...

1)  The headlight does not come on, even when I try to turn it off and on with the DCS Handheld.

2)  The backup light does not go off when the locomotive is going forward-it can be turned off with the Marker Light command on the DCS Handheld.

I checked the headlight again and it is wired correctly-the wiring is not broken or pinched.

I checked to make sure that the backup light is plugged into the correct connector in the tender (there is a cable/connector for the backup light and the rear marker lights and I thought that I might have confused them, but the backup light is in the correct connector.

All of the other features including smoke and the rear coupler are working correctly.

Should I be trying other chain files?

Thank you.

gunrunnerjohn,

I used the chain file that you recommended and that cured the issues!  It is 100% now!

I have several more of these to do, so I am going to download all of the chain files on that page for the future.

engineer-joe,

It was the PS-3 board that came with the PS-3 Steam Upgrade kit that I received last week.

The chain file was the one that I found on the page on the MTH website with the sound file.  I am not familiar with doing this at all, so I must have downloaded the wrong one.

LT1Poncho,

I watched your video several times.  It helped me a great deal.  I studied your component layout and wiring.

On the pinched wire thing, I worked really hard not to pinch any-with the additional wiring it was not easy, especially in the locomotive.

I got lucky on the smoke unit-I had the one on page 29 of the manual and did the cut on the circuit board trace.  I have not had that many of these apart, but I don't recall ever seeing that smoke unit before.

The next one I have to do is so old it doesn't have any sounds at all except for a very electronic sounding whistle.  I think it has a Seuthe smoke unit, so that will have to be replaced.

Thank you all again!

Remember, for the PS32 board, those are the ONLY chain files you'll be using.  For real factory steam installations, you would indeed use the chain file in the downloaded ZIP file for that specific locomotive.
