MPC 6200 Turbine Question

Just a thought, and no promises on the outcome Bruce, but you might try reversing the wires from your transformer-to-track and see if the whistle ceases.....

Thanks D&H65, just tried that but still doing it.  Wonder if dirty track might be part of the problem?  Maybe I'll try cleaning over the weekend, needs it anyway.

Dirty track could be a cause of the problem, but it would tend to exhibit random whistling instead of a constant whistle.

But if you can, try a different loop of track as well as a different transformer.

Probably a bad capacitor in something that old.

TRW, when I first got the loco on my main loop with a ZW it was constant.  I then put it on another loop with a KW it was kinda random.  I then hooked up a CW80 and that made no difference.  When I reversed wires on the ZW loop it became random making me think that the track might be part of the problem.  Sometime certain pw tenders will whistle without being activated.  like I said above track needs to be cleaned anyway and I'll look at the foam in the tender over the weekend.  Thanks for your suggestion

I hope this gets fixed. Even though it is old it is such a nice engine, the whole set is great. In fact it is tied with the Great Northern 4-8-4 that is also from the FARR series as my favorite engines.

I also have the MPC turbine.  It does the same thing.  Since I don't like the "Sound of Steam" I turned it off.  The "Sound of Steam", chug, chug, doesn't go with the turbine anyway.

I agree that the sound of steam is not that great but I kinda wanted the whistle to work when I wanted it to.  If none of the above works, I will turn it all off and run silent.  I really like this loco, runs well and looks great on my small layout.

Perhaps one of the more knowledgable members can tell us if there is a way to turn the steam sound off, but keep the whistle.

You maybe very disappointed when you hear the whistle. I had this engine many years ago and I didn't care for the whistle.

my tender has a switch underneath that turns off the sound but keeps the whistle.  Now just need to know how to fix this issue 

I'll have to check my tender.  It's been quite some time since I have had the loco out of it's box.  

That may be my next ERRCo upgrade... after my Budd RDC project!

FWIW, if you put an ERRCo upgrade in the turbine, in the locomotive, there is a youtube video on how to do it.  Some modification to the lok chassis required due to space issues.  If you put the upgrade in the tender, probably not an issue.

Included 6-26816 REA TrainSounds boxcars with each when I gave FARR 3 and 5 sets corresponding to the years of their births to daughter and son, respectively, to run around their Christmas trees.  Both agree the sound effects are preferable to MPC-era chuffing and wailing, leaving the tethers disconnected and tucked in the cabs.  May want to consider as an easy alternative, although the cost of obtaining one today may be equivalent to the price of an ERR kit.

Still endorse the recommendation to re-seat the tender electronics for the sake of preserving the original board, however inferior the sound effects may be considered.     

If you could live with a whistle only, I would pick up one of these. A American Flyer whistling billboard.

Young Sheldon must have one of those whistling billboards.  My heart palpitates and  brain synapses misfire when a steam whistle blows while he is running a diesel-electric locomotive around his garage layout.

Got into the tender tonight and wiggled a couple of wires and put some electrical tape in one spot and everything seems to be ok now.  Wonder if the tender body was pinching wires.  When I ran with out the body everything was ok, put the body back on carefully and everything seems ok now.  Hope it stays this way for the long haul.
