I was about to replace the battery in my PS2 M1a tender until I noticed that the old battery is labelled as 2.4v while the new RadioShack battery is labelled as 9v. So I didn't replace it. I thought "better to ask first" . So, can I replace it with the 9 volt one?

there are 2 revs of batteries used in MTH PS2. 8.4 and 2.4V. The 8.4 looks like a 9 volt battery. The 2.4 V looks like 2 AA Batts with blue shrink wrap.

You need to replace like with like.

If you go to mthtrains.com and type in battery on the product locator, both types are on the first page.
