Hello! I have a LIRR FA-2 20-2457-1 with a fried ps2 3v board, it is the bottom board with all the logic. I have a replacement bottom board, however when I hooked it up it ended up being a board from a LIRR Budd Car 30-2843-1. I tried replacing the sounds and the sounds were replaced, but the engine still thinks it's a Budd car and is not operating right. When I power it on the motors briefly jump back, then the engine powers on. When i go to change direction the whole engine dies, it has a BCR2 installed. When operating in DCS, I have to add the engine every time it powers on and set the direction lock to F/R instead of F/F, but the engine does move and make sound, although some of the functions are not working due to the engine thinking it's a Budd car when it's not. Any advice on what to do?

Did you replace the chain file or just the sound file? I would start there, however others with more knowledge may chime in.

No I didnt! Thats exactly what i thought i needed, but i didnt know the name of it!
@KSG350, this may help you find the chain file for the type of engine you have!

When loading the files back into the board, load the chain file first then the sound file!

Thank you for your help! Sadly I wont be able to try this til next week
PS/2 boards don't have chain files, just sound files. If you really have a PS/2 board, just load the sound file. Did you do a factory reset of the board after changing the sound file? I'd also try a conventional reset, occasionally that helps. I know that trolleys can fail to function properly until you do a conventional reset. One whistle & five bells in a 1/2 second on/off cadence for a conventional reset.

Test the BCR2 by starting the engine on powered track and then cutting the power. How long do the sounds play for?
If the BCR2 is not working, the board can do all kinds of strange things. Many are on your list.
You could have a bad BCR or the wiring to it.
The fact that the original board got fried scares me to think more is wrong here.
When bottom boards get damaged so can top boards. Specifically, battery control circuit. Do you have a good top board? What you can't change when loading a PS-2 Sound File is the serial data. Which is the permanent name of the engine. Only a tech with dealer loader can do that. You can change name with remote in DCS, but after a factory reset it will default back to original programmed name. G

Yes the top board has been replaced with a known good board
You did not state that in your original post. So, either BCR is bad or you do still have a bad top board or bottom board wrt battery circuit.
Power engine up so sound playing. Turn track power off. If sound go out your BCR is not charging. Or even with new battery if it cuts off the battery circuit is damaged.
3V boards can be repaired in most cases, though there are faults at processor level that are not repairable. I do those types of testing and repairs. G
