Not sure which forum to put this under - MTH forum or Lionel forum but I have an MTH model and a Lionel Legacy model of Union Pacific's 9000 4-12-2 steamers. Aside from the usual differences and similarities, I discovered that the MTH model locomotive is a half inch shorter than the Lionel model, their tenders are exactly the same. I learned many years ago from an O scale 2-rail modeler that when the Big Boys were first made back in the late 1990's and into the 2000'[s, the MTH locomotive was over a half inch longer than the Lionel model (same applies for the later models from both manufacturers. At the time, he said the Lionel model was dead-on the correct length whereas the MTH model was a "pencil on wheels". Well, now I found that one maker's model of the UP 900 loco was considerably longer than the other and I'd like to know which one was accurate if not both being incorrect. Would anyone here by chance know which one is correct in length?

thanks guys,

Ralph

I have the Legacy version of #9000 and will measure it to see if it’s overall length corresponds to the reported length of the prototype. That length is said to be 102 feet 7 inches (per Wiki; the museum where the engine is on static display rounds it up to 103 feet). I don’t know about separate measurements for the loco and the tender, but in O scale an accurate overall length would be slightly more than 2 feet 1inch.
