Shane, nothing wrong with what you have. Like George above said, they're nearly always repairable. And because of the quantities these trains were made in, parts are usually available. And many times parts from one product were used in other products at that time frame. In the worse case scenario, sometimes it's cheaper to buy another one for parts, especially since prices for common used postwar and MPC period trains are down from where they were a decade ago.

I myself am quite attached to 027 track despite some limitations. It allows more interesting layout configurations in smaller spaces. And challenges one's creativity: I cut ties for my track made from brown foam, which fits snugly under the track and helps a great deal to curb the usual rumble noise down.

No doubt if you have spent any time reading this forum, you'll noticed times have changed. A lot of new features, digital control systems and more true scale proportions in many new products. And as impressive as many of these new features and options are, well there was a saying years ago: The magic of Lionel.

When I first heard that phrase, there was no digital control or scale realism. But I knew just what the phrase implied: It meant using your imagination! I have the same sorts of trains as you do, and in my imagination, they do everything that the newer trains do and look every bit as good.

Keep an open mind and check things out here. Even from threads I thought wouldn't interest me at first, I still find myself occasionally being surprised by learning some tip, trick or something I never knew before.

PS: There's a search feature on this forum. But I've found it's actually easier to search using Google: It'll bring up replies here on this forum for the topic you're search for, or the question you have.

Yes your right...as a modeler..i can fix almost anything...or scratch make it..the post war lionel ive had very good success in motor e unit horn repair or instals...the new stuff is Awsome..even the 90s had some good things...but in my case...SPACE is limited in my basement..so the New generation i can't do properly...the little test platform is 4×7..it will stay in the little music room..but hoisted to the cieling wen not in use😉but...im gunna give it a go in my basement....ho to the left of me...0 to the right...and there ill be stuck in the middle🚂😜🚂💗

Mine is a great smoker as well, but  I wore my old Adriatic out till the gears skipped... again...I was still a kid the first round. At least it took about three times as long this round, lol. My fist train, it waited for me at my birth. Magnetraction's special bushings and gears for it are hens teeth, and I don't want to rebuild her as a non-magnetraction loco.  I'd rather see it idle, stored on a loose piece of track (do this, good for the magnets fyi ) and hope for a lucky break. I don't really want to scrap another for parts either, she deserves new after all this time and hard service.  There are small plastic drawers full of them out there somewhere, there always is.
