“Dr Frankentrain” is at it again. I converted this nice PS 3.0 Railking F3 to a Penn Central version by adapting a Williams F3 body. Getting Penn Central diesels from MTH seems to be a challenge so I decided to make my own.
You can see from the photo that the two F3 body shells from MTH and Williams and nearly identical. Both are scale. I had to tweak a few things to mount the Williams shell but it wasn’t anything drastic. Everything lined up – headlight, number board lights, crew interior. etc. I was even able to reuse some of the body mounts/screws.
The LEDs used by MTH for the number board lights are significantly brighter so I glued some pieces of white paper over the inside to diffuse the light. Worked great. The Williams loco never had smoke so I also had to open up the exhaust stacks and mount the smoke fluid guide.
This was a really nice little engine in the first place with those sweet PS3 sounds. My only gripe is that they mounted a coil coupler on the back of this A unit. The length of the coil coupler tends to make the gap between units a bit large.
Video? Of course there's video:
I’m a happy PC camper.
