Let me relay a true story. My neighbors daughter works for Coach handbags in NYC. Their most expensive designer handbag sells for $399.00. It costs Coach $16 to have this handbag made in China. True story!  Lionel is also following the same policy of relying on the brand name to trick the ignorant consumer into spending big bucks for cheap Chinese made goods that you can throw away when they need repair. I'll bet that it doesn't cost them more than $100 for that Legacy Hudson that lists for $2500. Come on, whose kidding who here? .

I think your kidding yourself in exaggerating the numbers. The markup is considerable but not that much.

I'm not sure that Coach purse market necessarily conforms to the toy train market, as I bet the margins are different.

True story, though, on Coach handbags.  My wife loves Coach handbags and once a year buys a couple of them at the local Coach outlet store.  Last week she stocked up on them!   Here is an example of one she bought; original price $349; reduced to $249; in store half off lowest ticket price than an additional 20% off - $249 x 1/2 = $125 x 20% off = $99.

I have yet to find any of last season's trains for 72% of ticket price, but I look!

Marty - Although I tell folks about (sponsor) the OGR Forum, I'm  not selling any trains today.

Jim - My wife has also bought some Coach handbags at outlets at low prices as you mentioned.

OK folks:

Now lets get back to our topic. Why have we not seen the big Lionel dealers announce their pre-order prices.

There is absolutely no parallel in terms of mark-ups or pricing from the apparel industry to the hobby market.

The new Lionel 2014 Signature catalog offers some wonderful new products. Some of our good Forum sponsors have already posted their pricing which show some very good discounts below MSRP. Those who have not yet posted their sale prices will most likely do it very soon. It is still a very good time to be in our hobby.

Hey, Jack

I have two daughters 24 and 26 and they love Coach anything. I wished they loved Toy trains.

Could be wrong, but it seems to me that Charles Ro pricing on new catalog items always is a few weeks or so after the release date.  Not sure about TW.

I don't get all of the anxiety over the "big dealers" not posting their prices immediately after the catalog was available. THIS IS NOTHING NEW.

All of the paranoia surrounding getting VL bigboys ordered/ deadlines weeks before the catalog even came out

Whether you order it today, or the last day of the preorder or BTO date, you aren't going to get it any sooner, and  the price will be the same.

Maybe this catalog is just that good?

Sort of like lining up at the gate to get on the airplane.

and let's hope when they post their prices it can be contained into 1 thread.

We spent alot of money and time upgrading both the buildings we are in and our inferstructure here in order to better serve you, the customer. It is time to bring the hobby/train store into the future in order to survive. Change is constant and so we must change our way of doing business also. Thanks for your support. Charlie and Chris...

Actually to Charlie Nassau's credit, he already indicated that he would post 1 thread for the 2014 catalog.  It only makes sense to keep it all in one spot for questions and answers.  Obviously since there are 5 catalogs I think it would be logical for 5 different threads representing each catalog.

I'm sorry, you DO remember that this is the OGR Forum, don't you?  Should be good for a half dozen threads at least.

Which brings me to something I have always known that cost has little to do with the market price of a product. And it is meaningless to discuss it as consumers. The cost is really the business of the business and judging the morality of the business based on the consumers simplistic understanding of it's cost is in my mind inappropriate. If we as consumers were so knowledgeable about what it takes to run a successful business, we would be on the other side of the counter.

The Markup for musical Instruments is about 100% (COG=$50, MSRP = $100).

Not in OUR industry! It is tight. In order to compete you need a great credit line, own your own wearhouse and buildings, be stable enough to be around a long time to gain customer trust and buy direct, not through a middle man.

Remember, it not ALL about price. Placing a order with the "lowest" dealer may look like a good deal but remember this. Can he really deliver? Will he stand behind it?

Thank you....Charlie and Chris.
