Hey guys, I've been a long time reader but just now subscribed to the forums. For a couple years now I've been setting up a Lionel chirstmas layout for the first weekend in December. It's free and open to the public so family's can come enjoy the trains for christmas.
Weve framed up the table and laid the track and done the wiring, now it just needs decorating. Here are some pictures so far. I'll update more thoughout the week

I got my flyers from the printers, and we started putting some snow down. Also wired up all of my accessories, and this year we added the log loader for kids to operate. 
You've got the right idea by adding the operating accessories for the kids to operate. If the Legion Post has some bar stools you can place by the accessories for the kids to sit on that would be great. We have a local group that brings stools for their display and the kids go bonkers!!! It also saves the parents' backs from holding the kids up.
We have a section of the layout with Thomas, James and Percy and we also have a lion chief polar express, we give the kids the remote so they can run those trains. It brings on a big smile and they really enjoy the interactive part of the layout.

More pictures as more decorations and scenery go up. Look closely, we have a lot of smaller details that are pretty humorous when you notice
