Fantastic looking engine!

Just pulled it out of the box new, added it to my legacy system. First, tender has a bit of static noise on it, but the primary issue is that I get no chuffing at all. Everything starts up fine, bell and whistle work perfect. Crew talk works, towercom says 1 thing only. Seems to idle in neutral with boiler sounds. But no chuffing at all, tested this in conventional mode as well and had the same result. Please keep in mind that I'm very new to Legacy so if I need to reset anything a bit of instruction would help.

Thank you

Update!

I did get it working, just ended up deleting the entry in the legacy controller and re-adding it back again.

I do have two follow up questions.

1. The static back ground noise can be annoying - its like listening to a radio station that is just out of range. Not sure if something can be done with that. Most audio seems fine and clear, but the idle sound is what has the most static.

2. The instructions specifically state that the Tower Com will call out the engine by road number and name, but I have yet to hear this. I just get the hold and clear talk.

Thank you again for the help on this.

For the most part an idling steamer sounds like static. Granted, the newer legacy locos  sound less like static and more like steamer, but I think for your loco what your hearing is normal give the sound system it was equipped with at that time.

So far all is well, I did turn the volume up all the way and perhaps I am confusing static with typical boiler sounds (your video was spot on Rick!) This is my first Railsounds and TMCC engine. The fact is all the other sounds are pitch perfect and clear so I'm good with it.

I still haven't solved the Towercom not calling out the name/number since it is stated in the manual, however perhaps this is one of these scenarios where it was put in the manual but never implemented.

I also own this version of the CSS and its smoke unit is the most anemic of any I have.  My dozen other steamers (mostly from various RTR sets) put out triple what this one does.

It's the only command locomotive I own, so I don't know if perhaps it's just a problem related to running a command loco in a conventional environment... It's on my list of things to work on, but not near the top at the moment.

What type of transformer are you using?  Lionel have advised that one using a chopped sine wave will give the best results with modern locomotives and smoke units. On the video it made a very noticeable difference.

I thought you may have read this.

RailSounds sound system operations Using the RailSounds sound system in the conventional environment When you first power up your locomotive, you will hear the sounds of the locomotive at rest. As the locomotive moves, the chuffing sounds automatically increase with the locomotive’s speed. In the conventional environment, the whistle and bell sounds are activated by your transformer controls or sound activation buttons. To silence the chuffing sounds, slide the RailSounds sound system switch located on the underside of the tender to the OFF position before you power up the locomotive or after the locomotive has been powered down for a minimum of ten seconds. The whistle and bell sounds will still be active. To adjust the volume, use the volume control knob located on the underside of the tender. For proper operation of the RailSounds sound system during track power
